Hi,
I am total beginner at instrument play, I am 21, but I really feel need to start learning some instrument. I cannot decide between clarinet and trumpet. Please, can you help me to decide?
Which instrument is easier to play, easier to learn? Considering fingers, breath, timeconsumption... Which one do you think is more beautyful and which has greater usage?
I'll be very grateful for your posts.

The only way you are going to be able to tell for yourself, is have a few(3 - 10) lessons for each instrument
(rent them for a month or few) and see which you like the most after a couple of months.

i'd say to go with the clarinet, but then i am a bit biased.
its a great sounding instrumet,
has an excellent range
the notes are linear (i.e take 1 finger off and you go up to the next note) - trumpet you only have 3 valves
clarinet is very good in jazz, classical, blues, klezmer, chamber music, etc (not sure as to the trumpets' musical range)
large range of dynamics, and timbre

AND, if that hasnt sold you, the name 'clarinet' comes from 'clarino (trumpet)' and 'et (little)' little trumpet (from wikipedia ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clarinet ) - so its not that far away - in a manner of speaking!!

but yes, i agree with the previous post (sorry i dont remember your name...) do try both of them, and listen to a couple of artists from both, and see which you like more.

i hope ive pursuaded you in favour..
let us know what you decide

neither is easier. they're hard in their own ways.

with clarinet, you have to deal with reeds and stuff. there are a lot of keys. also, if you have particularly large hands, it is apparently difficult to start with, (my friend discovered this, he kept bumping extra keys, and ended up switching to sax after a few months and likes it much better.) it's a pretty instrument, though.
trumpet, (speaking from mellophone experience, not quite the same but close enough) some people just can't buzz. your lips are the most important thing for making sound and sounding good. there are only 7 or 6 valve combinations, but each one can make many different notes which your lips decide. if you have trouble listening to the pitches, hearing the pitch you want in your head, etc, clarinet might be a better choice because for the most part, if you play a note, you're not going to get a random other note by accident instead. but trumpet is a cool instrument too.

i'd say listen to some music of each and just decide which one you like the sound of more. then if you end up not liking it, you can try the other.

LISTEN TO ME! I play both the clarinet and trumpet. I will recommend the clarinet because after a few weeks on the trumpet you will want to just throw it away. It hurts your lips and its REALLY and i mean REALLY hard to play high notes on the trumpet. The clarinet, in my opinion, is easier to play and easier to have good tone. Trumpet made me so mad after a week and when i just started everything sounded like crap. I still cant play trumpet very well and at the clarinet I am very good. I cant force you to play the clarinet but as i said, trumpet hurts! After a long while you will manage to play trumpey good if you have a goos tutor.

I must thank you much for your replies. You guys gave me some important info and suggestions. I think I now know main differences between clarinet and trumpet. Clarinet seems easier and also I like the sound of it better. Best idea is to try them both for some time. I have already tried recorder (or fipple flute as we use to call it in our country) cause I see some resemblance with clarinet and my friend has it. I think it was good, it worked well on the first try, but I need my fingers get used to it. IŽll let you know which one I choose after some trial. Thanks again for your posts, it helped a lot.

I think beginners should take piano.
It sounds stupid now because your a beginner.
But piano is like a foundation.
Without a foundation, you can't eaisly build up.
DON'T GET ME WRONG- there are many great musicans that didn't learn piano first.
But I have been lead to believe that piano is the one of the top for learning first.

i have a grudge against a trumbet that swelled my lips so i say go for the clarinet. lol but seriously its up to you and what kind music you like. I'm a string person so dont take my word for it, but i think either instrument is cool. I know a guy that rocks on trumpet, plays in jazz groups and stuff, real awesome sound. Clarinets are also great in jazz combos as well as many other types of groups.
