Any good suggestions for getting into this form of music? Is it more like jazz improv in it's learning method, or would you suggest method books?

Hi. Yes the website http://www.manchesterklezmer.org/pages_history_musicology/what_is_klezmer_intro.html is a good one - especially the scales file and the link to the midi scales file. As soon as you hear them you can hear feel the difference. You could also look up "modes" as a lot of other traditional / ethnic music is based on these type of scales. Klezmer music comes in all shapes and forms. Every country where Klezmer musicians live draw on the local music around them and fuse it with their own tradition. It seems to be the most diverse music around. I have heard it from many countries and they are all different while also being the same. It's in the roots of the music. You'll, of course, find lotza examples on YouTube. Good luck!
