Got myself a decent mouthpiece (Yamaha 4C) and a BG ligature and had a play. Not sounding great but I'm a total beginner. Plus I had the lig on upside down. Yea I'll blame that

Some ligatures are designed to be 'inverted', and you can tell if the side away from screws has a 'hump' in it. If so, that is the side the reed goes on. Often, you will also see bars or dimples on that humped side.
