Help, someone! I played clarinet fairly well all through high school. Then I stopped playing for MANY years. Recently I bagan lessons and was able to pick it back up, but I have an annoying tone in the upper register when I tongue the notes, not when slurring. Anyone out there know what to do to rectify the problem?

Most likely you just are having a problem with your embrochure since it is somewhat easier to slur notes with a relaxed one. You can try to tighten up on your lower jaw when tounging and see if that helps!

Make sure that you are maintaining a steady airstream all the time. It can be very easy to unconsciously let your air be affected by what your tongue is doing and stop blowing momentarily every time your tongue moves.

You shouldn`t tighten your jaw so that it clamps the reed. What you should have is even pressure all around your embouchure.
