OK...I`m going to be a freshman this year and want to know what I`m up against. How hard is the sight reading for highschool all region? Like something out of a C rose book? What book would be about the same leval that i can do some reading out of??

hi my name is danielle. i`m going to be a junior in high school and i`ve been doing regionals for clarinet since i was a freshman. 1st time i went in i was scared like no tomorrow but there`s nothing to worry about if u make it, u make it. if not there`s next yr.
the sight reading part about it is real easy. the reason y is cuz i sight read all the time w/ my private teacher. so it depends on how well u can sight read.
but just do ur best as u can and have fun!!!

I live in Canada so I don`t know much about "all regions" but I would HIGHLY doubt that you would sight read any rose study. Especially being a freshman. I know for my university/college auditions I need to sight read at a grade 6 level (from the royal conservatory of music) which is very easy. A few examples of grade 6 pieces are: Mozart`s clarinet concerto 2nd movement, Debussy Golliwoggs Cake Walk & The Girl With The Flaken Hair, etc. The music is very easy and it is, like I said, for university auditions so you shouldn`t be too worried about All Regions.

If you want sight reading practice, would reccomend the UK`s Associated Board (see http://www.abrsm.org/ for details.) sight reading tests, which I belive are regarded as some of the toughest in the world. You can purchase these in the USA from http://www.burtnco.com/abkybd.htm - click "enter", then "Winds, Brass, Perc, Voice", then seatch out Specimen Sight Reading Tests, grades 6-8 under clarinet _right-hanf column, below the flute stuff).

If you work through all of those, you will be extremely well prepared for sight reading test that anyone could possibly throw at you.

Hey there... Just graduated from a Texas HS, and i`m infinately glad i never have to do region again =)

Basically, sometime at the end of summer, tmea.org will announce 3 pieces that will be the try out music. They`re always from the rose book, usually one fast, one slow, one in between.

Practice hard! Unlike middle school, you don`t have to play scales for the try out. Definately don`t sightread =( That just makes the other people in the room cry because it makes the whole process longer

Oops. i misread. There`s no sightreading at region. that`s just for full band competitions. Competition varies region to region, but try really hard. Maybe one year you`ll make all-state (which rarely happens freshman year anyways) and it`ll all be worth it. Four days in San Antonio under direction of amazing people!
