AT my high school, you cant join jazz band unless you play saxophone with your clarinet. You cant get in only with your clarinet: sax has to be on your application too. Whats you oppinion? Personaly it peeves me! I don`t even like saxophone that much so why would i wanna learn how to play it???

The instrumentation for jazz bands does not include Clarinets. 2 altos, 2 tenors, 1 bari, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones, 1 bass, 1 guitar, 1 keyboard, and a drummer is the proper instrumentation.

I am in the 9th grade and have been playing clarinet since 5th, my director wouldn`t let me play the clarinet in jazz band, but he did let me play bass clarinet and mimic the tenor sax 2 part. But someday, I hope to play clarinet in jazz band.

P.S. If you need to increase your range...play bass clarinet for a few months, in november i couln`t play the c right above the staff, but a small four months of playing the bass clarinet, my range is up to the "Super C".

It`s true what the person above said about there being no clarinet instramentation in SOME jazz bands, but if these are school jazz bands than clarinets should still be let in. For one, students should be able to play ALL types of jazz, and clarinets are a big part of swing or dixieland music. It`s too bad you don`t want to play the alto, my band director won`t even let me try, i`m stuck doubling the trumpet or tenor part on my clarinet. Personally, I think that you should just keep pestering your band director, he has to give eventually!!!! Good Luck!

At my school we don`t have any real jazzband but when we play jazz in the orhestra I often get to play the altosaxophone part. It actually sounds really nice with altosaxophone and Clarinet playing together.

Well, just look at Glenn Miller! He plays Alto, Trombone, and Clarinet! There`s no harm in having Clarinets in Jazz band!

I think the clarinet is considered to be a solo in jazz.

Well- Clarinet has been phased out of jazz ensembles over the years probably due to its fat, ugly cousin the soprano saxophone. :-(

I play in my school`s stage band, and we perform them music when our Arts Academy puts on stuff like broadway musicals ( we just did Cabaret, and of course I had the Solo Clarinet part in it- btw, its a really fun musical). We do have a traditional jazz band though, which I am not part of , but I prefer the Bebop, swing and dixieland we play to the cheezy generic latin jazz that they play.

On a side note- Benny Goodman is not the only jazz clarinetist people! He is not even the best in my opinion! Artie Shaw was the best! Benny`s band used to constantly get outplayed by others of that era. Now into modern times, what about Pete Fountain, Larry Combs and all those other jazz clarinetists still performing today?
