I have just begun playing the bass clarinet for fun, and now am already the primary bass player in my high school concert band. In 2 pieces I have solos, and in one I carry the melody alone for several bars. My problem is, when I want my high register it seems to squeak, and when I want low register it jumps up an octave...obviously it`s something I`m doing as the bass I`ve been leant is absolutely gorgeous and apparently in good working order. I humiliated my conductor at a concert the other night...I need to redeem myself. Any ideas what I could be doing wrong? Any hints would definitely be appreciated!

I`m having trouble too. my teacher said that I need to change my ombichure somewhat and blow harder, but it takes about five seconds to get the right sound.

I never played a bass clarinet, I only play Bb Clarinet, Alto Saxophone, Flute and Alto Clarinet. But I do think you have the embouchure problem, just relax your embouchure when you are playing the low notes, for the higher notes just tighten your embouchure slightly, it will help you to produce a better sound over the break. Except this, practise jump from low notes to higher notes, by playing more you will get a better sound on the clarinet. Practise makes perfect...
Some people may tell you to tighten up your embouchure for every high notes, but I learnt from an expert that its not always your embouchure, to have a good embouchure is important, but you should also try to blow your airstream in a focused way for the higher notes, that will help you to stay in tune. Embouchure+Focused Air Stream will certainly improve your playing.
Merry Christmas!
