Hi,
I have a problem when using the register key, or to be more exact, when dropping back to the low register after using the register key. Basically, most of the time the note doesn`t drop immediately when I release the register key, especially if I`m slurring. I can, however, use the register key to trill from the lower register A to Bb, and I`ve checked out the key itself for leaks etc. It seems to be fine.
Anyone else have this problem, and could it be caused by poor technique (I am very new to the clarinet)?
Thanks
Tim

Hi I am not exactly sure what causes it but I did have that happen to me durring a concert band practice and could not fix it right away. I know that it caused a real problem though because it really annoyed my band director. I had a friend look over it for me because I am blind but she said that the pad was fine. I tried to move the key around to see if it was sitting right and that solved the problem for a little bit and then it started again. I found that the thing that helped the most i when I had my friend take the key off and had her clean under the pad and then re- attach it. That really seemed to help because now I do not have that problem.

If you`re slurring, that`s just the way the instrument works -- it won`t drop back to the lower register unless you tongue the note. Don`t try to slur down. As far as it refusing to go back down if you tongue, that could be caused by moving the jaw or tongue in some way. Keep your embouchure (mouth position) completely steady when you`re changing registers, up or down.
Feel free to email me with any questions.
