I`m in senior band, one of four oboes. My school has separate
bands for grades 8, 9, and 10, and as far as I know each of
them has at least one oboe too. So no shortage of oboes around
here.

Hi oboists,
Now that we all know that you are not extinct, I would like your advice. I play the clarinet, and other instruments, and would like to add the oboe to the list of instruments that I play. What would be the difficulties in taking up the oboe after playing the clarinet for 10 years? What things would be made easier by this?
Thank you

Personally for me, it was the posture and the chromatic scales... very odd to have to slide your finger (Bb to B, C to C#) and the use of so many octave keys. But you`ll get over it soon.

I also play the saxophone, and I heard that its fingerings were very similar to the oboe; is that true?

i play in intermediate band at my school, and as far as i know there are only three oboists at my school, although the one in the year below me is dropping out. Unfortunately, i do not know of any other oboists in my town, but i do know the first oboist in the Melbourn Symphony Orchestra.
So in answer to the forum question, yes! there are oboists out there!
Oh, and on models, last year i rented the school one, which is really dodgy and more than the usual amount of keys are flatter or sharper than they should be, but now i have my own. A secondhand model, it`s an Armstrong and has served me well. But if you have the cash, get yourself a Buffet model. These are REALLY dear, but if you want the best, get one!

THere are 3 Oboes in my band, one who also plays English Horn. Then there are another three in another of my school bands, and one in the other band at my school. As well as about five at one of the feeder schools into my high school and probably a few more at the other. We are not dead at all, believe me!
