mariquax oboes are the dominant oboes in Europe- they are especially big in Europe
my favorite oboes are laubins but a lot of people dont like those so

Ive been playing tenor sax for 5 years and now im starting to learn oboe! I just bought a wood bundy oboe, mostly because i could afford it. Is that brand really as crappy as everyones saying?

Marigaux seems to be the best European oboe. They last model(2001) really beats staistics in Europe.
Great intonation, very good response, solid dark tone.
The only thing-it`s cracks sometimes, but what oboe doesn`t?
The list of players of Marigaux pretty impressive-super stars of European style chek this out http://www.marigaux.com

Obviously Loree is the best. I doubt anyone will argue with that. But any preofessional model by a recomended brand is fine. just play it before you buy it. I recomend Loree, Fox, and Yamaha. I have played one of each, and i recomend them in that order.

Is a wood Selmer Signet oboe one to avoid, and if so does it matter if it is for a biginner or not?

Other people on this forum have mentioned bulgheroni. I have an oboe form them and it rocks. Yes it`s the student one but dont let that title throw you off, it`s actually an intermediate oboe and is on par with the buffet 4052, it`s got all the same keys as the buffet exept for the 3rd octave. Anyway the tone is great, nice and dark in the low register and warm in the upper register, plus the sound is really focused and even thorughout. I can`t even imagine how great their pro oboe must be. Anyway yeah bulgheroni=great oboe. and as everyone lse has said avoid slemer their plastic oboe is trash if u want plastic get fox renard, their oboe is hand-reamed and they make a full pro plastic oboe so oouy;re no theire at elast dedicated to making a good plastic oboe as opposed to selmer or bundy.

DEATH TO SELMER! DEATH TO SELMER! (I say again) DEATH TO SELMER! I am a beginner, but I play quite well and every single time lately I get a B instead of a Bb, I get some off-beat combination of octaves on the high notes, I can`t go between octaves without funk coming out first. DEATH TO SELMER!

You know, my teacher has a lorere and sounds fantastic, but I heard her playing some 50 year old piece of junk that someone brought in for an appraisal, and she sounded fantastic on it. She called it crap, but yeah...
ANYWAYS, the point is, you can sound great on anything, as long as it`s in adjustment. It`s easier to learn what a good sound is and how to produce it on a better oboe, and theyre more reliable. You`re not going to be playing in professional orchestras on a crappy oboe, but if youre just beginning, no point in spending $8000 on a professional oboe and deciding youd rather play the flute or something.
Wow that would suck.

wahh, this thread is a kind a crazy!
a few people who seem to know about what they are talking and a lot of noobs(sry).
i think u should not concentrate on the instrument u have! in the very first years it`s really unnecessary to play a oboe worth €5000 ore more!!!
see: Albrecht Mayer(solo-oboist berlin philharmonie orchestra) would probably play better on a plastic oboe than everybody else posting in this thread using a top oboe!
so don`t be nervous about ur oboe as long as it works!
Johannes
