I was wondering about an oboe from Lorilee. Is this a Loree clone, and can anyone who has one tell me if it worth checking out? I want to get my daughter one, she wants to step up from a Bundy student model. thanks

Well .. I had a student selmer oboe .. I now have a selmer 104 .. it`s not wood and has all the extra stuff you need - unless you want like a 3rd octave key, because it doesn`t have that.

My 10 year old daughter just started playing oboe. We rented from the school program, which, in my opinion, is a total rip-off (and she got a Selmer ). Can someone give my advice on what to buy her and where to get the best deal!

I would recommend the Buffet intermediate instruments as well as the Yamaha`s. Overall both are good instruments at good prices. I played a Yamaha 411 back when I started and it got me through high school. I would recommend looking at several of the online instrument dealers, they can offer good deals, although you can`t try them before you purchase. Another suggestion is to talk to your daughter`s band director for a recommendation of a music store in your area that may have something that would be appropriate.
Best of Luck

my goodness gracious. does everyone think selmers are horrible instruments are something??? they really aren`t. this is my fifth year playihg a selmer oboe and I would recommend them highly. the selmer 1492 student model oboe is very nice to play on and in my experience had a very nice tone to it. the selmer 104 is also very nice; has a nice tone as well and doesn`t have any problems.

Yamaha is the best by far.... I do have a Selmer and it`s not as bad as I would have thought.

what would be considered to be a good intermediate oboe?
I know i don`t want a Selmer or a Yamaha.
and i don`t want it all wood either, maybe just the bell or something..

A good intermediate instrument depends on what you`re looking for, and how long you`ve been playing. Why are you disinterested in the Yamaha intermediate oboes, they make great intermediate instruments? If you`re looking for a partial wood instrument, the upper joint will be resin, or a composite material, and the lower joint and bell will be wood. What do you have now for an oboe, and what do you need? That`s the only way someone can really recommend brands and models.
Best of Luck!

WHAT MORE WOULD U WANT?

I have been reading with interest the comments on which oboe to buy, which sounds the best and which ones to avoid, as one contributor stated, it is 90% `you the player` and not the oboe, if your oboe is in tune and working correctly, no matter what the make is, it will sound good if you can play it correctly Give the cheapest in tune selmer to a proffesional concert oboe player and he/she will make it sound great, and as for which is the best make, well there isn`t one, it is just a matter of personal taste.

Like with every instrument, there its good things and bad things. Obviously, some companies like Selmer and a relatively new one like monique (???) are bad ones. Have you tried looking at the Patricola Evoluzione? They have a great Rosewood model, full conservatory with B flat vent key and triple octave (or 3rd octave) key, it has a beautiful open sound. I currently play on the newer Howarth oboe, its top of the line model features a redesign bore for a more open sound, sweeter, and had an amazing projection. The trill keys, instead of using two holes it uses the same hole, and both keys sit ontop of each other, for some reason it makes the trill from CtoD and C sharp to D sharp sound amazingly clear. But everyone has their own favorite oboe. I don`t think there is a best oboe model out there. I truly believe that "best" is what you think fits your personal tastes and sound. I think Loree`s are over rated and I think the sound is too european, to narrow, but thats my personal opinion. My coach tells me that these are the best oboe to start on (if you are trying to buy a intermediate/step up oboe) Fox Renard 333 or Artist (they have a model with the B flat vent key on it!), Yamaha 441 or 441P, Fossati Graduate Model or Tiery, Cabart, Gordet, or the Blessing/Marlene, OR you can try to Covey intermediate oboes, they have an extremely great sound with some features of the pro lines, or the Barrington 801 oboe, it has all of the features of a pro-line oboe, its made of resin body with woodgrain finish, its an all plateau model, no split D/E ring, has a great sound, and even scale!
