I hear that to play bassoon, you require lined up teeth or overbite. Luckily, I do not think I have an underbite (either inline or SLIGHT overbite).

I have a prominent front jaw growth, and worry that I may develop an underbite. How much would that affect my playing if it happened? Also I can hardly move my jaw backwards to get a good overbite-that is nearly impossible for me.

ps) bassoon rental starts in just over a week!

i haven`t heard any bassoonist i know having trouble iwth their embouchure due to the shape of their mouth. Unless you have something that is in fact unusual, such as your dentist has discussed problems with you, you should be fine! but of course, it takes years for 99% of bassoonists to find a nice sound with their lips etc. I say 99% because of people like Judith LeClair who probably had no trouble.

And its not right ow, he just sais that theres faster outward growth in the jaw area than everywhere else.

This may be worrisome because websites either say:

"Common Faults:
blablabla
blablabla
underbite or in-line teeh"

or

"A teacher should look for a student who has larger hands, decent height and back posture (hehe my back is like bent) and an overbite."

I azm worried that it may happen some day, and bassooning will be difficult to impossible

when you put the reed in your mouth, at least in my schooling of bassoon, you want your upper lip to be a little farther out htan the bottom one that is more a cushiony thing tucked in. Some people play more lined up in the lips etc etc but i don`t think anyone plays with their bottom lip farther out, which could be what they are referring to not wanting. I happened to have huge hands as a kid so it wasn`t a worry, of course i still had problems.

I am having trouble finding a place to rent a Bassoon.
Does anyone have any recommendations?
