I believe they were good instruments. Made from the right materials, from the right design. This instrument looks like mint condition, basically unused it seems like. None of the typical nicks on the U-tube, typical from using the included mops (donīt use them, get good swabs instead) The lock pin between tenor and bass is not shown so it could be missing, this is easily sourced. The pads should probably have been changed on an instrument of this age, otherwise you would expect a bit of service there. Regardless, giving the instrument a session with a specialist bassoon repairman has always left me smiling, so it is recommended in order to get the instruments full potential.

Price level looks about right. It has all the keys and rollers and water linings I would expect, including the high E that at that time probably was not that common. Built before the wall went down in 1989.

Bassoons are individuals as we know, you really have to play an instrument to know. I have played next to people playing old GDR Monning-s which sounded very nice to my ears.

Thick walled in 1988?
I have no information on Monnig, but everyone seems to copy Heckel, and they started making thick wall bassons in 1963.

Fox started in 1991 with the 601, so it is not unconceivable.

Monnig bassoons can be really excellent, however they are very variable. 40-50 years ago they were quite common in UK but then went out of favour - probably for more being expensive than & not much better than the cheaper Adler.

I've heard varying reports of the current range of models, which has merged with the Adler range. Adler are the lower priced student instruments & Monnig pro ones.
