I am an oboist, but am thinking of also taking up the bassoon (as bassoonists seem to be more in demand...) Can anyone tell me if this is likely to cause problems for my embouchure? I would still like to carry on with the oboe, rather than dropping it completely.

Well,I play the oboe too,
but my boyfriend plays the bassoon,he said that It`s harder to go from oboe to bassoon.and it`s easier to go from bassoon to oboe
because on a bassoon you have less pressure on the reed than on an oboe.
Also, apperantly they don`t soak their reeds
and you don`t have to hold you`re breath so hard like on the oboe.

Well thats what my boyfreind told me.
hope you`ve had something about it.

greets Zoë

I`ve been playing bassoon for 25 years and I ALWAYS soak my reed. Don`t know what her boyfriend is talking about.

hey hey!! im a oboist.. oh my god!! he doesnt soak his reeds that cant be good, it`ll really screw up your reed, It`ll crack wouldnt it?.. and its so much harder to blow a note out of it.. and omg i want to lean bassoon too, but the cost of the instrument is totally out of my price range, i dont even have my own oboe yet, im hiring it, its not bad though but the bassoon is a awesome instrument.. i would love to learn the english horn aswell, AWESUM instrument!!

cheers

I play both Bassoon and Oboe, I played the Bassoon first for 4 years and just about a year ago I took up the oboe as well. From my experience, it would be more difficult transferring from oboe to bassoon because the embouchre for some reason is harder to transition that way, Its easier to develop the overbite of bassoon embouchure and then switch to the oboe embouchure than vise versa. I also think its just safe to say its easier going from big to small, not from small to big when talking double reeds. I also have an english horn and in a concert coming up I play all three and its not that hard once you get used to it, all it will probably take is alot of practice!

Note to self: Soak reeds.

I just chuck it in my mouth and spit on it a whole lot.

I played my friends oboe and its awesome. So much easier than the bassoon, but she was able to make a sound on my Maxie very easily...
