Which instrument would sound more like the bass strings? Bassoon, or Bass Clarinet? I just wanted to know... Thanks

a contrabassoon IMO... i heard a song where the contrabassoon was going real fast, it sounded like a double bass i swear... lol.

iunno, a bass clarinet, just sounds really, clarinet-ish, and my bassoon can`t make a sound like a double bass... not to mention a double bass` notes can only be matched by a contrabassoon or a piano...

Lol! Ya, bass clarinets do sound to clarinet-ish and it sounds too reedy. Does the bassoon sound more like cello?

then a bass clarinet? yes. definitely... and you don`t have to transpose cello music, b/c they`re both C instruments. (the bass clarinet is Bb)

Oohhh that`s nice, our family already owns a Bb soprano clarinet, I did it last band yea, and I don`t want to do clarinet again... I was just thinking that it might be nice, but now I`ve made up my mind to do bassoon even though it is the most pricy instrument to rent here in Canada. (around C$450~600 so US$ 380~570 maybe) I`m lucky my dad pays a lot of money for school related things! P.S., we`re the only 2 posting!

Ugh, and now I have to wait 6 months to get the bassoon and now I`m stuck with my flute and piccolo. I begged the band director for the piccolo soon after I learned the flute because I wanted solo`s and be heard, but now I want to be calm and do bass parts and get solo`s from time to time...

I`m going to go to high school next year and I know I shouldn`t switch instruments for high school, because they only teach the basics in elementary, but I`ll rent a bassoon over the summer, and get the good method book that we use in elementary, and teach myself, or if I`m horridly troublesome, I`ll just get a private teacher. Or I could ask a lot of question here I don`t know if the high school has a bassoon for use, since the school is only about 8 years old, but I think $500 an year is affordable, and better than buying one, for 3000~6000 and then selling it I guess... BTW, which type of bassoon do you use, plastic, or wood?

plastic.. it`s a school one. we have two but one has gone FUBAR... (------ up beyond all recognition...)

i think learning it alone should be fine. just read up on bassoon maintainance. there`s a lot to know considering cleaning it every time you play it (i`m serious, i DON`T clean mine, but every time i don`t it sounds so nasty the day after) and u hafta know to take care of your bassoon b/c so many pieces are really delicate but at the same time expensive *cough* stupid bocal... besides maintainance and the fact that reeds are so freaking expensive ($14 canadian a piece)... playing the bassoon is fun.

if i could afford a wood one i would (no pun intended -__-) those things cost quite a bit. maybe i`ll get one once i get a job...

Hehe, I used to play clarinet and now flute, so they say flute needs cleaning every time, but it doesn`t sound bad, just smells bad.

So I guess, I`ll be teaching myself! And if the school owns one, then I`ll just rent it from Long and Mcquade for the summer and then switch to the school one.

Stupidly, I might get braces soon or in September, no idea when, (yes! high school with braces! ) so, I might be practicing the whole summer and suddenly get braces! Would it wreck my embouchure? Or would I have to spaz out and practice to get used to it?

some how a doubt that seeing as your always on here complaining that you cant get the right notes to come out. i`ve been taking private lessons for 6 years and i have a less than perfect embochure and tone so i doubt you`ve got it after the time you`ve put in. but i guess its something for us all to shoot for. Cause nobody on here is a Klauss Thuneman

*sigh* that`s not what i was implying... god you people here are so sensitive about your fakking embouchures... by perfect i meant i`m satisfied with it. all these people saying oh, i`m not even a bassoonist and i know more than you blah blah blah... or oh please, yu think your good (mind you i didn`t say that but i`ve seen people say they were `pretty good` and get attacked by 10 other people)

to be honest, my embouchure is way less than perfect, if i could choose different words now? hell yea i would. but god damn. do you have to tell me i was wrong in a way that makes you come off as such an asshole? i thought you were cool. i mean i can`t even reach a full 3 octaves... T_____T (sad, i know, but stfu)

God, if you see that part where he did "My embouchure is perfect ... ha ha The part in bold, means he`s kidding or some way most of us understand. Seriously, you don`t have to get all sissy about it acting like a flautist... which I am

lol, thanks. aaw no flautists aren`t sissy lol, galways` a manly man.

anyways, basically i meant that it`s ok with braces, i`ve always played with braces and have never noticed any major problems that would make my embouchure different than the way that is recommended. brass is where you might come across a bit of trouble. although, when you get your wires tightened it hurts for a day, but playingbassoon the day after you get them done hurts way less than playing clarinet the day after. OMG the friggin clarinet... the day after you get them tightened and your sensitive teeth are vibrating against that hard plastic.. =/ hurts sometimes...
