Hello, people! I'm just new here and a rookie trumpet player also. Since I'm always working overtime, I don't have the time to take trumpet lessons. That results to me not knowing the correct ways to play. One of the things that concerns me is that sometimes when I play my lower lip turns a little blue. It doesn't hurt or anything, but, really, could you tell me just how serious this could be and what to do to avoid it? Does it influence my playing?
Thanks

don't fold your bottom lip first off. second of all you're probably applying WAY to much pressure to your face. air man, more air less pushing.

I agree with the 'kid, to much pressure on your lips. Most new trumpet players think that adding pressure increases their range but nothing could be further from the truth. Air, air , air, and oh yeah, air. Breath control. I will be the first one to tell you that I play way to much. The only way that I can though is through little to no pressure on my face and Steady air stream. One last thing, it normally takes me a couple hours to get my chops nice and sizzle, so if you are pulling the horn out the case and trying to play some Maynard Furgie, that is the wrong answer. Warm-up, Peddle tones, mid range chromatics, and get and Arban's.

exactly, same goes with me. long note dills, nice and piano. PLAY SOFT..it def. helps your air control. you want a stready airstream. don't get me wrong, you will have to apply pressure to your face...but you're not going to be shoving the horn down your throat. You want to have some pressure so the mouthpiece is against your face. Not just touching, and not ramming thru your skull. Little pressure, tons of air. Like charlie schlueter (principle trumpet of the BSO) says, more air=less work
