Stamina in Upper Register?

Hi, I am a trumpet player of what I would say average skill/talent. I practice nearly everyday for 20-30 minutes. I usually play some scales, practice lip slurs given to me by my instructor and then practice actual pieces of music. Usually after I warmup I can play up to a C above the staff with decent tone and without jamming the trumpet against my lips. However, what I am noticing is that usually after about 15-20 minutes of playing, my range begins to decrease and anything above a G above the staff won't come out- I try to play the note and all I hear is fast air flowing through the trumpet. I think I lose my buzz in the high notes. Even the G sounds quite airy. It is a little frustrating because I can play these notes with a full, crisp tone immediately after warming up, but this does not last. I was wonderign if anyone has some tips as to how I can increase my stamina in the upper register so that I can hopefully resolve this problem with my playing? Thanks.

DesiTrumpet,

Firstly, thanks for using correct grammar. It is increasingly hard to find these days. For where your at, it sounds like you should be practicing more than 20-30 minutes each day. I usually practice in 4 20 minute sessions, (about an hour and a half altogether). The first session is all warming-up. Now, if you're practicing 20-30 minutes each day, it would be safe to say that you're probably not getting the full warm-up you need. A good warm-up is key. If you are trying to expand your endurance, simply increase your practice time gradually. The key word is gradually. Start by practicing for five more minutes than usual. After a few days, or whenever the extra time feels comfortable, add another five minutes. You can't expect those muscles to get any stronger if conditioning them.

I hope this helps!

I also have a few questions for you, pertaining to your endurance:

-How long have you been playing?
-Do you have a private teacher?
-Are you currently working on any book studies, (Arban, Clarke)?

<Added>

I meant to say, "you can't expect those muscles to get any stronger if you're NOT conditioning them."

You cannot achieve refinement without muscle strength. Refinement doesn't simply happen.

That happens with every trumpet player after playing a certain amount of time. You've just got to keep at it so that time get's longer and longer, so that it takes you 3 hours before you're range decreases instead of 20 minutes.
But don't push for those notes once your muscles are tired, you'll do damage rather than good.

My band director says this to everybody wanting to get a good sound and increased range. "Long tones!" He says they are the most boring things you will ever do but they help and I agree with him. If you have a tuner, use it! Just hold each note going up progressively for about 8-12 counts at about 100 bpm. Lip slurs work too. This is hard to explain. What I do is start on your first fingering for the concert Bb scale. So slur up two partials and back down. You should go C,G,C,G,C. Then go to the D fingering (1,3) and do the same. Go all the way up to 3rd space C. That's how I get to an E above the staff now. Good luck!
