I don`t think that there is a top notch trumpeter out there considering the fact that there are so many, but I do belive that David O`neal and Phil Driscoll and marsalis and maynard are to me the better in sound, range and control.

I THINK OF ALL THE PLAYERS, LIVING OR DEAD, RICHARD EBBOLE HAS THE TONE, RANGE AND TECHNIQUE TO RATE AS THE FINEST PLAYER WHO EVER LIVED.

Can someone recommand the best Wynton Marsalis` CD? He has quite a few CDs, and I`m planning to get one, but don`t know which one is good.
Thanks!

Right now, I`m really interested in Nicholas Payton. But I still looooove Miles Davis and of course Louis Armstrong. These men including Marsalis are much of the basis for today`s jazz music and trumpet styles. Like for instance, Sandoval`s tone and trumpeting technique is influenced by the great Dizzie Gillespie and Nicholas Payton`s by Wynton Marsalis. So you know, every trumpet player is awesome just depends on the music, and they should have some originality.
OH! and by-the-way, does anyone know what CD, by Chet Baker (another wicked player), has "In Your Own Sweet Way" on it. I`ve been looking for that song everywhere!!!

thanks

Without question the retired lead trumpet player for the Army Blues, Dave Detwiler. Dave has it all. Upper register, tone, technique, etc.

I just listened to that Andrea dude from the link above. I agree that he`s good and that he can play really high. His soloing needs more taste than high notes though. Listen to Jon Faddis for high notes AND taste.

Man yall haven`t heard real music, No one metoined Al Hirt he is no doubt the best trumpet player ever. He died in 1999 but his legend lives on and it all was will. He is a unbelieveable trumpet player. If you have never heard Al Hirt play download one of his songs off of Kazaa and see what a great trumpet player he is.

Wynton Marsalis is the best. Tone, style, range, he`s got it all. Bill Chase was the best lead player, but he died. Maynard`s lead players can outblow Maynard any day. He`s too old now.

it is unfair to judge and compare great musicians from different genres because they will excell in the idiom they love and it should not be forgotten that it is the music that is important. therefore the range and tone of ferguson puts him head & shoulders above mere mortals but equally clark terry has range, technique and style and then there is james morrison who just shines on whatever he blows. classical players like dokshizer, andre have unrivaled technique but never loose sight of what they are doing which is playing music. after saying all that they would all have to go a long way to beat mendez!

Jokin there top players however wynton i have to say leaves me a little cold 100% respect for his ability and dedication but lacks that spark that terry, ferguson, sandoval, dizzy and lois have and had. but i say again check out rafael mendez and the more i think about it james morrison

Dr. Michael Schmidt is the greatest high note trumpet player    15:17 on Wednesday, January 21, 2004

The Greatest high note trumpet player alive is Dr.Michael E. Schmidt.
Yuo can not talk about playing high notes on a trumpet without mentioning dr.Michael E. Schmidt because Dr. Michael E. Schmidt is the greatest high note trumpet player who is still alive and when you think of high notes on a trumpet you have to think of Dr. Michael E. Schmidt because Dr. Schmidt is the king of trumpet high notes and Michael Schmidt can play high notes on a trumpet higher than Arturo can.
