We were able to pick up a Bach TR300 Brand New on ebay for $497 with no shipping. Excellent instrument at an excellent price. Ordered it out of Australia and got it in 5 days.

Hi all,

I currently own a Bach TR300, lacquer, that I use for marching band. Got it from a music store in New York, $400, brand new. Has been an excellent horn and only needed a bit of maintenance (spring, guide rings) after 5 grades of playing on it. It`s still a great horn today, while I`m in 10th grade, from buying it in 4th grade. The valves are always great and it`s a good player.

I have played on Getzen`s, Yamaha`s, and the other low-range horns, and compared them to my TR300. I can say that the bottom range is a lot better on the Bach, for sure. The Bach is also more consistent with tuning.

I`m sorry to say, being unbiased, Yamaha makes good motorcycles, but not low range trumpets. I have played on Zenos, though, and like them. I am certainly not a Bach fanboy.

Just like all of my Motorola cell phones, I buy what works and what I like. I don`t say that one brand is superior. Everybody has their own opinions; who I am to say that your $20k monette is a boat anchor? I don`t have that kind of money to spend on a trumpet, nevermind a car. I buy Bachs becuase they are quality and their prices are reasonable.

Near the end of last year, I purchased a Bach Stradivarius S37 standard model silver plated horn, under the advice of my trumpet lesson teacher. I can definitely say it is a better player than the TR300.

Most beginner trumpets don`t even know how to finger a high "F" on the staff, not the octive above, so why are we worrying about what horn Arturo Sandoval plays on? The guy is looking for a good beginner horn for $400, not a lead player`s that is 50x more expensive. (literally!)

My pick is the Bach TR300. Your beginner can always advance with age, and play on a 20k horn when he is the next Philip Smith. I bought a new Bach Strad last year, and until then, did fine on a TR300.

Just make sure he plays on a few of them before purchasing one.

You could always rent for a year before deciding that he is definitely going to play the instrument throught high school.

My $.02.

Bach and yamaha are best. i dont know which yamaha makes are good.(however i heard their Bobby Shew trumpet is good for jazz). as far as bach goes, dont get a Stradavarious unless its the old model. they stopped making those and instead made the new model, which is worse. if you get a bach get an OLD Stradavarious or a Bach Omega.

I have to say, go with a Getzen or a Schilke. Yeah, Bach`s are nice, but their tone can be somewhat bright, in my humble opinion, and unless you`re playing lead it`s just overbearing from a musician`s standpoint. Of course, this is coming from someone who feels that he has been done no disservice in his use of a Yamaha TR235, so I dunno. My two cents: great players make any horn sound amazing, not the other way around.

Hi, everyone. Just found this forum. Ok if I put my two cents in? I`m a come back player. Working hard by taking lessons to catch up. In regards to buying a silver horn or not, I`ve heard all the arguments. The best one was, that it didn`t matter. Silver or lacquer. I`ve got a silver Bach 43. Love it. In a way, I feel like a showoff when I`m in public with it. Stands out like a sore thumb. But, this I know. Silver stands up from the moisture and acid from your hands. My instructor says silver makes a brighter sound. I don`t know. I`ve heard some great sounds from guys with lacquer. It`s a choice, like anything. Regards.

It`s a matter of choice in terms of what trumpet is best for a certain player. However, that kind of consideration only needs to be taken into account at a later stage in a trumpeters life. I started on a old no-name trumpet and it served me well until I outgrew it. And then it was time to move onto something more in the intermediate level. Which is when I bought a Getzen 300 series.

The Getzen entry level trumpets are a good quality trumpet for a reasonable price. And in my opinion Getzen is one of the best you can find. I do know that Bach is a very good trumpet, but I found serious issues with the Bach in that it isn`t very true to it`s pitch as you go higher. But for a beginner this isn`t too much of a problem.

The laquer of a trumpet is not very important, it is true that silver is more dense then the clear laquer on trumpets. This density of the silver laquer causes it to absorb less of the sound emmitted from the bell. So it does give it a slightly brighter sound. This alone is not enough to seriously alter a player`s sound. If I had to take the cheapest trumpet I can find and give it to the best player on this forum, that player will make that trumpet sound better than anything the not so good player could do on a $10000 trumpet. It`s all about practice.

I must say that I was very dissapointed to see the fighting between trumpeters on this thread. There are children who also follow this thread, and it is hardly any inspiration for them to see such childish behaviour.

I`ve been thinking about a new trumpet, (mines a piece of crap!!!) I`ve been reading some good things online about the Blessing ML-1. If anyone owns, or has played one of these trumpets, is it nice? Does it have good intonation? Do the valves tend to stick? Do the tuning slides tend to stick? Anyone who can reply, please do! I appreciate it greatly!!!

back on that debate a long time ago. Silver changes the tone of the horn. Beginners can`t make it worthwhile, and really good trumpet players can make that sound on any horn. For the rest of us, silver will give you a brighter sound.

I play on an ancient Blessing student trumpet that Blessing has stopped making. The valves are the best i`ve ever used and that includes pro models. I`ve never used the one you are looking at, but Blessings in general are pretty good.

If your going to complain about somebody, at least learn how to spell! Go back to grade school if necessary. I never take into consideration what somebody has to say if they don`t know how to spell. In my opinion, bad spelling just proves to the world that you have a low I.Q.

I`ve play many different brands of horn and found that pound for pound the schilke products are the best sounding. I`ve found that bach has the most comfortable valves. I`ve found that Taylor are the best made.

What trumpet do I favor, all things considered. Schilke

What trumpets to buy: Bach Strad series/ King 2070 Legend/ Schilke [any], Benge 3x or better/ Yamaha 6300 for beg/int/ 8300 series pro/ Taylor if you`re a rich perfectionist/ Callet Jazz series

Basically stay the Heck away from weird off brands[ you`re asking for trouble there] if in doubt google the horn and model number and read reviews as much as you can... If all else fails email me. I`ll try to answer your questions; and I can locate any horn and purchase it for you as a broker. kpiette@comcast.net

Good Luck!
Oh and did I mention you should travel to the largest music store you can get to, and sample every horn. Make sure you`re a pain in the butt to the salesman, because that`ll gaurantee that you have sampled enough horns to make a relatively good decision. Believe it or not I found my backup horn that way. A used beat up TR300 with ligthning fast valves!!!! [I just don`t tell anybody what it is, that way I avoid the howls of laughter it would produce]
