Listen carefully......DON`T BUY JUPITER!! That is easily the best advise that I can give you. Who am I? I`ve played tpt for 20 years, and taught elementary band for about 6. I have talked to repair guys and they say that they see a lot of Jupiters in their shops, and the same horns over and over.

A great student/intermediate level horn is the Bach TR-300. You can try some Yamahas, but Bach and Yamaha make about the best trumpets out there. Of course, you need to consider your level.

You will have to shop around for the Bach TR-300. In Phoenix, AZ one store priced it at $400, and others up to $950. I don`t get it, but shop around and make sure that they have what you want.

Good luck.

For God`s sake, or at least for those of us who want this forum for exchanging information and ideas in a useful manner, GET A GRIP!

I have a Bach 180ML lightweight with a Sterling Silver bell. It cost me and extra $333 to get this option. It is about 98% silver and more than one of my trumpet teachers at the time told me that it has a great sound. Philip Smith (NY Phil) doesn`t NOT have a silver bell (as far as I know) and he sounds amazing. Don`t forget guys that what works for Candice (who I DO believe is a female, John) will not necessarily work for other players just as good or better than she is. Each one of us has to fidget around a bit to find out what works best for us individually. THAT`S the whole point of this forum. To try to help one another to find out what is right for each of us.

Relax guys. Disagreements are helpful if you respect other people`s opions, and debate the facts. Get take stuff personally.

Cheers to all!

You`re a smart man with a good head on your shoulders. Great to have a guy like you on this forum. I totally agree that the best way to choose a horn is to hold it in your own little hands and play it yourself, and maybe your teacher if your still not that advanced. I got a Bach C tpt that`s the same exact model as a buddy`s. My friend`s C plays a little bit better than mine; a little really, but still noticable.

Cheers

My advice is try out a Bach TR300. It`s a GREAT beginning/intermediate level horn. If you want a pro horn, you`re going to spend around $1000 or so. I tried a Bach TR300 a few years ago because my school district bought some for my band program. I and my top student both loved it. I tried one again just a couple of weeks ago since I just got a new student and was helping him and his parents decide what horn to buy for him. I STILL think it`s great! They can be a bit pricy (up to $950US), but I did find a store in Phx, AZ that had `em for $400-$450. Shop around; try Giardinelli on the net, or some other big national mail order stores. Good luck!!

Cheers

My friend has a Jupiter... he was first chair in our youth wind band for 3 years... BUT... when he left and let me use his Jupiter, it was LOUSY!!... DON"T get one.. the reason why he was able to maintain it was because he spent a lot of time on it... but it still was a bit stiff at the tuning slides... however I wouldn`t mind Jupiter mouthpieces for beginners....

By the way, I think you shouldn`t really look at my advice that seriously... i`m a trumpet player for 4 years in a youth band... so I`m not very experienced as some others here.. but anyway all the best! =)

My son is in 6th grade just starting out. I play computers not trumpets. The music store is trying to sell me a used Bach 1530 for $700.00! Frankly I think this i robbery.
What about the Bach TR300? I am looking for the replacement for the 1530. This looks close.

Any comments?
Thanks
George

I`ve been playing several horns(all brass with a mouth piece) in 30 yrs of having fun with music.Reading this,we seem to have forgotten what was asked,a good trumpet for low dollars. My advice is look on ebay for well known brands in ur price range that are in good shape.I wish U the best of luck in this and hope u enjoy playing all ur life,no matter what brand u pick.(and if it matters,I use a Getzen severinson model made in 74 that is my fav,but u wont find horns like this in ur price range unless ur very lucky)Bach 300 used is not that bad of a choice and u can get 1 for the money u want to spend

I have played professionally on and off for 20 years - i recommend an olds special from the fifties period - usually on ebay for about 300.00 to 400.00 - they will play with the best bachs , or any prohorns made - i have 2 bach strad 37`s - gold plated ,reverse lead pipe , 25 lead pipe , fully engraved - and a silver 37 strad both play well but are from elkhart from the seventies (silver-my high school horn) (gold horn is from the late 90`s)- the silver is brighter - i have a 1951 raw brass olds special and its darker and sweeter sounding -the range opens up surpassing the bachs above high d up to double c - the super olds from the late fifties play sweet too - my favorite is the olds opera (great for symphonic work or jazz) - pricey though -about 1400.00 but i feel it surpasses all but the custom made schilkes , lawler etc -if you are in a pinch -buy an ambassador -early fifties - have it restored for about 300.00 - it will compete with the bachs and the getzens - and is a sweet sounding - getzens are too light for my taste and easliy over blown - they feel cheap but Doc played on stock severinsons off the shelf in the 60`s 70`s and his playing speaks for itself -

Try the Yamaha Xeno ytr8335s.
Yamaha`s have a different feel then Bachs. I would highly reccoment that you try this and the Bach Strad model 37 before looking at other entry level proffesional models...
