Olds Recording...good choice - Value for $$    01:01 on Wednesday, November 17, 2004

The stats do sound strange..

I like Ken`s advice on Olds Recording. I forgot about them, they are a great buy, and sound really good. A very popular choice in 60s and 70s. I had a Pro-player friend (Paddy Fitzallen from Oz) who really played hard - and could that thing fly!!! Seriously look at it.

I`d say most would agree that a Bach Strad is the ultimate way to go. I have a silver model 37, and I love it with a passion. Ran me about $2,000. Happy hunting.

No, only Bach lovers would say the Strad is best.
Not for jazz combos, not for big band.
If you paid two grand for it, you need a better music dealer.
Try Washington Music, or Brasswind.

If anyone has sound files of Trumpet Notes- Could you please email them to me YvoHath@wmconnect.com I have a yahoo group - and I Would like to have a section for Newbies or Bginners - so if they are self teaching they could have a frame of reference for the notes. Because newbies are not exactly sure what notes they are getting out. Or if you have a link to page with the sound files please email them to me YvoHath@wmconnect.com - I have found that there is not really any quality stuff on the net for newbies.

Hi - Peter is right the recordings are cool too - It really depends on the type of playing you do primarily - I seen great players in symphonies simply sparkle with a strad 37 - its the best bang for all around playing but can get a lot of resistance above F above high C - you have to work and sometimes your chops really can wear playing these in a lead type gig - the benges were popular in the early 80`s at u.t. austin jazz ensemble and I tried my buddies a few times and it made a big difference in its piercing sound that cut straight thru the section - I marched in the ut band for five years in college and the strads were 90% the horn of choice - I used a silver strad 37 ml with a 1/12 c bach and had a great big fat sound - they were a powerful horn on the field but you could hear the piercing sound of the jazz style horns out there - they did not blend like the bachs -the bachs ring and its very beautiful in a full concert hall when you hit that high C and you hear the ring at the end of a piece above the orchestra - The mouth piece makes a huge factor in the equation too - a shallow mouthpiece generally gives a tinny type high velocity piercing sound -great for big band jazz but simply inappropriate in legit orchestral setting and the sound in the staff generally is very shallow and nasal sounding - I went to a Maynard clinic in 77 give or take and each trumpet player (stan mark , joe mosello , ron tooley , and i forget the other guy) stood up and played a g to c starting from low g up to double high c - Maynard was first - He was playing at the time a jet tone mouthpiece - it was so big that he said it was only a few cc`s smaller than a small trombone mouth piece - it was a jet tone and maynard was using a custom holton maynard model trumpet in gold plate - he filled that room with sound and blew the room away -I was stoked -Stan Mark was my idol too as a lead player and this dude stands up and just delivers - i thought wow this guy plays better than maynard very big huge sound and you could tell he was working but he could deliver the power . - Joe Mosello stood up and did some really technical show casing he could play really quick and legit sounding with a few excerps from the beginning of conquistador (the echo part ) - Ron Tooley stood up and he was a big man - huge guy (tall and looked like a pro nose guard) - he tried it and was unable to get a g above high c out - I thought to myself hes not as good as the rest - Maynard advised that Ron usually needs to warm up several minutes before playing - I thought yeah right - Well I was dead wrong - that night we went to the concert - Maynard was tiring and called Ron out to solo - I will never doubt anyone who makes the Maynard band as not simply outstanding - Ron hit some notes so high above double c i could not really tell what they were - it sounded like an amplified whistle - i was truly amazed and felt so small a player in comparison - I was in high school at the time and had a double c range with my trusty at the time 6a4a schilke bill chase model - but these guys were on another plane man - I wanted to learn their secrets to truly owning the range thay played in - I studied with Ray crisara in college and he gave me the big bucket bach 1/12 c and said to stay away from the jazz sound - I had to change my style - i once told him how i wanted to learn to play like maynard and the charlier book was not helping - lol true story - Ray responded that he felt maynard ruined alot of players trying to imitate his style -I was not in total agreement but Ray could play anything put in front of him and it sounded like a clarke record - perfect - each note sounded like a perfectly round sphere - Ray played a lacq. brass bach strad 37 mount vernon - it was simply a sweet sounding horn and perfect for that type of playing - a jazz horn in that little studio would have been way out of place - so its really where you are and what you are faced with I have a few horns and still like to take different models out for the night depending on whats on the agenda - jazz -(the olds , maybe the benge , studio work ? the bach or olds opera , dont know and want to play it safe - the silver strad 37 or gold strad 37 (i take the double case )- it depends but the bach is always the choice when its unsure what im faced with and i might need that orchestral sound - i now play a bach 10 1/2 c mouth piece --- the gold bach strad is my tool of choice for orchestral -latin jazz - the ambassador is really great - alumni band at ut - the ambassador is packed - its a tank that happens to play very well outdoors and projects plus im not too upset if someone dings it - it doesnt ding very easliy - the metal seems to be wonder metal - its a fullerton from 71 year - but plays fantastic - 51 olds special is a great solo jazz , latin 50`s big band sound - small sound sometimes and sweet with a clear tone that starts to project at about a high g up - Well its late - later Ken

ight bachs suck. those are standard trumpets. quality trumpets are leblanc holtons. both arturo sandaval and maynard ferguson use them. and those are the two best players currently known. but for 400 bucks u can go to the pawn shop and buy some thing. but dont be suprised if it rusts up in a couple months no matter how much you polish it. i suggest u save your money for atleast a $1000 bach.

Hi Ken,

I have taken a while to catch up on this post, and fully agree with you.

I enjoyed reading your post, and it sounds like you`re about my vintage. I am full of envy for some of your past experiences..hey that`s what keeps us young.

I have a Bach Strad as my main choice, and a Bach Mercedes as a Jazz horn. It does play well. My third is a Sterling, and has a really nice warm tone. And a Clarke Terry Olds Flugel.

The best off the shelf is a Bach Strad, and the differences of opinions are helpful to hear what others think. There are some really good gear coming from Yamaha, and if I was parting with money again in my late teens I would go a James Morrison. Value for money counts, and it would be a toss of a coin...

Keep well, and keep blowin`

Hey guys,

Im sorry but what the hell are you doing here?
There was a guy who wanted to buy a new trumpet and he didn`t know what to buy
and the only thing you said was: bach is the best .....

I think it would be better to say something like: we dont know what the best maker for you, we playing this but you have to test some horn to get started and stuff.
I sorry but this is bull-sh*t, you havent helped him at all.

Remarque: Maynard is just playing monette in video clips and on pictures, he needs the money thats all..

bye
