Hi guys, came here for advice on my problem about playing in the morning. Basically im a 17 year old grade 8 distinction student that has just applied for music colleges. In the evening or afternoon I can play anything to a high standard (highest note a super G (2 and a half 8ves above middle C)), but irrespective of how much of a warm up I have had in the morning I struggle to get even C above middle C. I have tryed subtle embochore changes but to date nothing has helped. It has recently become an issue for me as I will be expected to practice early in the morning at music college and dont want to make a fool out of myself. I hope some of you trumpet guru's can help me.
Thanks in advance.

Check your "warm-ups" and see if they are actually warm-ups. Warm-ups are soft and slow. They slowly introduce blood and oxygen into the lip muscles. You want to slowly stretch your lips. Many "warm-up" routines are not warm-ups, they often include strength building which is NOT warming up.

It sounds like your lips are too stiff and don't loosen until later in the day. Try doing a soft slow warm-down before you go to bed and see what that feels like in the morning. Also in the morning try puckering and then smiling alternatly and holding each one for a few seconds. And floss your teeth before you play (this will help get your muscles stretched slowly). You might be surprised how much the flossing will help.

I recommend Walter Moecks Trumpet Warm-up routine. You can get it for $3.00. You should be able to play anything after you do his warm-ups. The routine takes about 20 minutes and you play screaming high or low afterwards.

the most important thing is that you get a consistent morning routine. long tones , and lip flexibility (schlossberg) exercises every morning. It will take awhile but eventually your lips will start being responsive in the morning. I had this same problem as a freshman in college, after I started a daily routine it made things much better.
