Hello everyone!

This is my first topic here, and I'm starting out with a question.

The thing is, I'm a 26 year-old guy that decided to learn to play the trumpet. I've already arranged a private teacher and now I need all the rest (books and... the trumpet). I hope my age is not a big

I need your help choosing a good trumpet for me. I've been asking this question to some friends of mine that also play the trumpet, yet the feedback given is somewhat different, so I'm asking this one more time to you.

I've established a budget for the trumpet and I've selected some brands/models that fit on this budget. What do you think of these:

BLESSING BTR-1270S

JUPITER JP-702 RL-F BB
http://www.thomann.de/pt/jupiter_jp702_rlf_bbtrompete.htm

YAMAHA YTR-2335

YAMAHA YTR-4335
http://www.thomann.de/pt/yamaha_ytr4335g.htm

BACH TR-305 BB

BLESSING BTR-ML1S
http://www.thomann.de/pt/blessing_ml1_s_trompete.htm

Which of these is the best trumpet? I mean, which is the best choice for the future? The one that will let me improve better and faster?

Or do you have any other advise for me? I'm opened to everything right now, since I'm only going to order the trumpet next saturday.

Also! I need a practice mute for the first months. The thing is, I've never hold a trumpet in my life, so this way you can see how newbie I am with the instrument. Saying this I believe that my first weeks with the trumpet, the sounds I'll be able to produce may be very similar to scratching a blackboard. I want to keep my neighbors ears safe!

Which mute brands/models should I stick with? Harmon? Denis Wich? Any other...?

Thank you all for the help!

Cheers

hey man, All those trumpets are fine for a beginner. I would stick to a bach or yamaha, just because they've proven to be very nice horns for the money.

as far as mutes go, I wouldn't use one while you're starting out because there will be a lot of back pressure when you try to play which can lead to some unwanted tendencies. However, if you must, a harmon mute would be best (less resistance), yamaha has a more expensive "silent brass" mute which has a pick up inside the mute and has a headphone jack so you can hear more of a normal trumpet sound.

Didn't know where to post this so I will try here. I also just started to play the trumpet at an older age. I noticed when I practice the scale or a simple song I get too much air with the notes I am trying to play. I could actually hear the air mixing with the note and it is not a very clean sound. Before I sign up for lessons I wanted to learn and practice on my own. Could I be forming a bad habit or will it correct itself as my lips get stronger?

Studying with a good teacher would be great for your playing, especially while you are learning the fundamentals. Sounds like you just need to work on creating a better buzz. Try buzzing without your mouthpiece or horn before you practice, then buzz on your mouthpiece. you can work out of the thompson buzzing basics book and also the james stamp book. practice at a softer volume than you would normally play, this will force your chops to create a more secure, resonant buzz.

I would go for the yammie 4335, more of a top end intermediate tpt rather than a beginners horn

Mine is a King. Why, because Al Hert played a King. I believe Chuck played a Yamaha. I have never found a mute that quieted the trumet down enough to not bother others while practicing. In the beginning, building your lip is the big thing. You can do this with just the mouth piece.
Find some recordings of all the bugle calls, and practice them with just the mouth piece. That's as quiet of a practice session as you are ever going to get.
After you can play all the bugle calls, try a few different mouth pieces. Make sure you are not pushing the mouth piece too hard against your mouth (teeth). It's not needed. You should be able to place the trumpet on a table with the mouth piece hanging out over the edge, and with out holding the trumpet, still be able to play notes. I had a hard time when I learned Tuba. It was hard for me to get my lips that loose.
