I have been a fan of maynard ferguson and other chops machines for several years now, all the while i have been trying to build my own chops to match theirs. I suspect there may be a problem with my embochure, because no matter how much air i use e flat above high c is the highest note that i can get out. After reading a book i bought on altissimo trumpet playing, I tried using as much air as i had been using except with a different more relaxed embochure, and suddenly i could get to double a and even double c. The problem is though, this embochure makes tounging very diffucult and going below g on top of the staff all but impossible. So when i attempt to use my old embochure after using my new one, i have a distinct feeling of tiredness, like the corners of my mouth have just run a marathon. Does anybody know what is wrong? Does the new embochure just need more breaking in?

it should not be about changing your embochure. get the book by patrick hession. you can get it at www.hessionssessions.comn it should be all about your air stream

the other thing from what you described it sounds like you`re jamming your trumpwt on your face. let me say this now don`t let anyone on here jump on you for wanting to play high. let them get to you about playing high the right way. don`t push against your lips do lots of lip slurs and try to do lip trills before trying to expand your range to far. if you don`t know the no hands method learn it. don`t change your embochure or it`ll kill you. practice hitting notes perfectly. start on a c in the staff and work your way up the c scale hitting each note 10 times. if you miss a note even in the slightest or it isn`t completely clear start over on that note until you can do it 10 times in a row perfectly and once you start to pusch your trumpet against your face stop and do lip slurs

Just don`t force anything - it`ll come in time. The BEST way to improve is to be patient and study with a good teacher.
Good luck,

High range will come naturally and with range work. If you dont realize also maynard was put on this planet to play the trumpet extremely high. Like, when i listen to him and i hear him just go off i stoped fiding the note he hits. I call those notes in the maynard octive right now. So if u want to improve your range work on it but dont expect huge resulets.

try using more bottom lip all the time and tilt up for lower register and down for hight about 20%. also try chagning the way u hold the instrument from little finger bellow 3rd valve slide to 2 bellow and 2 ablove and maybe extend ur first finger along the lead pipe, this reduces the pressure that u apply to your lips.
When applying this ne technique ensure that ur bottom lip is curled between ur teeth and ur lip. You are aiming to apply the mouthpiece 66% on bottom lip white tishue and 33% on the top lips. This should emprove ur stamina once u have applied this to ur general playing and your high register.
I have used this technique for 3 years and i am playing comfortable doubble c`s and can also double tongue in this register. I have been know to squeeze out a G above double C.
