im a sophmore in high school and i have been playing trumpet for five years now and in jazz bands for two years and i have found that with jazz solos it works best to just play and let it flow
i dont worry overly much about the progression, i just play what sounds good, and it sounds good

yea i dont know about other instruments but with guitar, soloing has absolute rules. u have to know the songs Key and the notes used. the solo needs to contain those notes and starts and ends on the root.

just relax, don`t get caught up in your mistakes thats the most important part. If you make a mistake just keep going and focus on the music not the mistake.

A great way to improve your solo playing is to learn as many different scales as possible. The pentatonics are a great place to start -- then the Blues versions -- then the Jazz versions and so on. These scales can be "mixed and interwoven" to produce any sound or style you want. I mix Spanish Scales with Rock Scales to sound Santana Like, then Blues Scales and Jazz Scales to sound Like Stevie Ray Vaughn or Jimi Henderix (Both used Blues and Jazz elements). It is also a good idea to listen to and study other solo artist from A to Z. Listen to everything you can and not just guitar soloist. If you can play with good rhythm and emotion, you should be well on your way to great soloing. Eventually you will develop your own unique style. I know I did once when I was playing outside. In the middle of a solo, a fly went up my nose. I had to keep playing and it was the best solo ever. Perhaps a fly will help you someday?
