The USA doesn't use the RCM or ABRSM system directly and most people here are not familiar with it. But you can get tested and certified. I was slightly involved with it back in 1980. Here is their present website (didn't have websites in 1980)

Pianos are usually in the key of C.(There are very very rare exceptions)
Bb trumpets are in the key of Bb.

In band when you are asked to play a concert Bb, what pitch do you play? (answer: C) So,you have to play a major 2nd higher to get the concert pitch. Which means when you are playing in C (no flats no sharps), the piano is in Bb (2 flats). So you will always have 2 more sharps than the piano. If there are 5 sharps in the piano and you want to tranpose it correctly you will move everything up a major 2nd and have 7 sharps. Fun Fun Fun.

Zoom: The rythms, harmonies, time and key signatures constantly changing. In the song "tonight" Tony and Maria have this nice melody while the Jets and Sharks are singing something totally different. Maybe he just seems complicated because I've never seen a Bernstein musical before.

I forgot to add:

RCM = Royal Conservatory of Music.

They have grades for practical and theory and things.

I don't think the US has anything like that? Because here in Canada it is the main grading system for instruments.


I do the ABRSM exams system - how do they differ? I'm afraid I've never heard of yours.

Ah, ABRSM goes from grade 1 to 8 - grade 5 also has a theory test which you must pass to continue.. you don't have do do every grade though, you could go from from grade 1 and instead of doing 2 do 3. Can you do that with yours?

From what I understand, ABRSM is the main system that everything goes by - for example, I believe you have to normally be grade 5/6 to join a basic orchestra and grade 8 to start music college.. someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Also, regarding the chinese person with one leg-Irene. I once watched a movie called "A Christmas Story" and the workers at a chinese restaurant were trying get in the spirit of the season and were attempting to sing Deck the Halls. But it turned out sounding like this: Deck the hars with boughs of horry(holly), far ra ra ra ra ra ra ra ra. Its a really stupid movie, but it was funny.
