Hungarian Folk Music is a highly rich culture of melodies, hardly known in the USA
You can find over 5000 melodies in Cimbalom Hungarian Folk Collection http://www.cimbalom.nl/
The site contains over 5000 (monophonic) MIDI files of these melodies and of most of them also a MP3 file.
Some further information can be found on Facebook:

Hi there!

Nice collection! If You are interested, look at my uploaded scores, You can find plenty of Hungarian fol-songs there as well. It is kind of an ongoing project, I'm always uploading new songs, and soon there will be mp3 recordings attached as well.

All the best!

Mate

Apparently we have about the same hobby. It took me years to collect over 5000 Hungarian melodies. But than you are closer to the sources and know the language. I have seen your Népdal MIDI files, almost all are in my collection.
For that matter is O szep fenyo Hungarian? I always thaught it to be German (Oh Tannebaum)
Doe you play in the orchestra of the YouTube video?
Have you seen the Melodycatcher http://www.melodycatcher.com/ where you can lay a melody you remember to fiond its title?

Well, I'm not really a collector. My original goal was to learn lilypond, and hungarian folk songs seemed to be a nice sandbox for that. Since then, It has now an other meaning for me, I'm trying to find people to sing and record as well, to get more people know, how nice our folk music is. It seems so, that the local music school and this girl will help me in this :-)

5000 is a big number, my respect to You and Your work. I'll probably never get so far, but it is not my goal either.

Yes, I know the language, I'm native Hungarian.

About Ó szép fenyő: yes, it has probably a german origin. I've just opened the christmas book of my schildhood this winter and made the score in lilypond for all of the songs I've found. This is probably the case for Csendes éj as well (Stille nacht). This is the reason why I have not indicateed hungarian people as authors. "Hungarian" in the braces are supposed to refer to the language of the lyrics.

If You mean the Youtube video on my site here, Yes, I'm the only guy with long hair, You can find me on the left side among the 2nd cello. But it is not really an orchesra, this ensemble was formed only for this little performance two weeks before the Advent fiest.

I did not know about this Melodycatcher, I guess it is similar to Shazam, just for songs, am I right?

Now I had a little bit more time to spend on Your site. Now I see the differences:
1) You have much more songs then I do
2) I have only folk-dongs and some children songs, You also cover Nóta
3) For me, tha main part is the music sheet, and mp3 is an extra, in You case it is the other way around

What I'm doing is closer to the procejt here. (I saw on Your website, that You also know this project).

Anyway, it is great what You are doing, and You are kind of professional, I'm just an amateur with a hobbi. But, if You need help correcting the titles or something, let me know, I'm happy to help You if I have time.

"I did not know about this Melodycatcher, I guess it is similar to Shazam, just for songs, am I right?"
Shazam and more sarch engines only work on (an audio-fingerprint ot )official records. The Melodycatcher works on any melody that has been indexed by this search engine. For instance all melodies of my Hungarian collection have been indexed. Try (play) G E G G E G A B A G ... etc on ythe onscreen piano keyboard and find As a szep... You shouild try, its an ecellent tool aspecially for older songs without official records...
You try to promote your countries wunderful music.. That's just what I try to do, especially in countries like the USA, where this music is hadley (if ar all) known. Cimbalom has over 200 daily visitors, mainly form Hungary, Russia and China (sic) but far less form the USA.
To this (promotion) purpose I just started to made a blogspot Hungarian Folk Music Collection: http://cimbalom-jlo.blogspot.com/ Comments are welcome

I see, thank You, it is pretty interesting!

Actually, the girl I have mentioned has told me, that people in China, USA and Ireland are pretty much interested to Hungarian folk music.

I don't know, what should do the best to promote that site. I've googled for "Hugarian folk music" and I've found Your site on the 4th page, which basically means, that it is not listed :-(

I hope, that that blog will help to make it frequently visited. I think the best way to make Your site more popular is to have links on related sites. I've at least posted it on facebook now to my friends :-) An other thing, that could probably help, if You'd put a more advanced and attractive ftontend in front of that high value content.

So far I rather used tags like Magyar Nóta etc than Hungarian Folk Music, meaning that ranking with these Hungarian keywords is better. Best ranking is by adding collection to the search terms, but unfortunately most people will not use that keyword. Just recently I started attempts to promote the site in countries like the USA.
I have had great difficulties in getting links on related sites. I am afraid that my site is to competitive for many of them...

Anyhow your help is appreciated especioally with comments on and spreading of the new blogspot page
