I think that the most important part of a trombone is the person behind the mouthpiece. The attitude you have and the chops you have are the most important part of the instrument. The horn is just an amplifier for the sound out of the mouthpiece, which just translates the sound from your lips. The choice of a horn depends on the player`s preference. I like the beat-up King 605 student bone that I have, and depite a nearly unusable slide and a 7" bell, I can make it play almost as well as a new trombone.

Should I replace my King    21:24 on Monday, September 26, 2005

I`ve got a King 606 student trombone I`ve been using in marching band lately and, well, it sucks. I had only played it for about 2 months and in many places around the braces between the slide the laquer has worn all the way down to the brass. I used to like King, but this recent one just sucks and is very cheaply made. I also think there is a serious problem with the slide. I was wondering if anyone else had these problems with a newer King 606 and if I should trade it in (775$) through this program and pay a $100 for a more respectable brand. And if I should do that, what brand seems consistent and is durable?

Conn`s and CL Mouthpiece    18:44 on Tuesday, November 1, 2005

the two best trombones I have ever played, is my conn 88hto, obviously, and then my band teachers old like 30 year old Holton Trombone. His, maybe because much of the laquer had worn off, felt a little bit more open, but I didn`t like it a whole lot because it put a lot of edge on my sound. I like a smoother sound and my conn gives me that. Bachs arent that great in my opinion. Getzens arent badd either but i prefer my conn. I am looking at getting a new mouthpiece also. I am thinking about getting like a 4CL Gold Plated one, the only problem is they are friking expensive. $88 for a mouthpiece is crazy. And thanks to whoever brought up the moutpiece comparison table because I almost bought the 2CL because the sales guy said it was closest to a Bach 5g but I didnt think it was. I saw that and was like you liar. ANyways, conns rule. And if I ever happen to get a really good paying job, and I have an extra several grand lying around, Iam gonna get one of the 88h`s with the open wrap, cl valve, and the sterling silver plating. That is one of the most expensive trombones I have seen that is not custom, that is a stock model. They are pretty sweet. K im gonna shutup now.

I just bought a king 606 off ebay that was made in like 1973 give or take a year or two, and it is the best beginner trombone I have ever played. When I was in 6th grade, I played on a jupiter witha trigger, that was a major ripoff, because we rented it and it was retailing at like 1400. I could/ve bought my conn and saved a buttload of money. ANyways, The king I just bought on ebay, i payed like 75 bucks for it. Yes, less than 100 for it. And it is probably one of the best deals I have ever found. It is not in great condition, the inner slides need to be replaced, because some of the plating has come off, but it still works perfectly so im gonna leave it. And a lot of the laquer has been scratched off. Not huge scratches, but the kind you would expect on a 30 year old trombone. Maybe the quality has decreased since then, but it is a great trombone, beginner or pro. It is tad bit difficult to hit high notes like high Bb, but that could be due to the fact that the mouthpiece I am using, is a 12c when I an used to a 4g or 5g. It is also somewhat dented in at the end of the mouthpiece, so Im gonna buy a new one, but it is overall a fantastic trombone.

the best trombone might not necessarily be the best trombone for you, that`s the point.
in my experience (hs sophmore) when someone finds a horn they like, they buy it, if they can`t find that perfect horn, they buy a getzen. i`ve never really been around people who swear by edwards, conn, or any other the many brands besides getzen and bach; which i know are generally good to buy from. i played for a year on a getzen pea-shooter, switched to a bach 42BO (one of the best decisions of my life imho) and i may buy a getzen 1052FD b/c i am going to play bass trombone for my school`s top band next year. everyone has their own standards and likes/dislikes about trombones, so i`d say: play on different trombones to see what you like, then buy a trombone that has what you want

You have to find the best one for you. Everyones different, thus your best trombone might be different from someone elses. But some brands aren`t good at all. Go with some of more popular ones, then find the brand that is right for you.

I've been playing lots o' trombones, and one day I decided to buy a couple of good sounding used horns, strip them all down to their base components like slides and bells, and create a frankenhorn with the best parts. I have an edwards 10 1/2" bell, bach .562 slide , and Thayer valves.

By the way, if your Cl2000 or Thayers stick, take them apart, clean em, and put em back together.
