Another example of Chormatic Scales in real life literature. Rossini's William Tell Overture. It's not QUTE chromatic, but you really need to know that sucker so well that you can skip notes here and there at half note = 108, straight eights.

I agree, Steve. The chromatic scale is definately decievingly hard. Most younger players think it's easy and that they have it down and it's not relevant to the real world. But, don't worry, we all learned that's not the case, so I guess they will as well.

well, I must say I disagree with that statement on many levels...
the trombone is an instrument that while being technically capable of being in tune all the time, is unfortunately also capable of being out of tune all of the time.
because most younger players think of the chromatic scale in terms of 7-6-5-4-3-2-1, 7-6-5-4-3-2-1, 5-4-3-2-1, 4-3-2-1, etc... they are thinking in positions, not listening. they are not paying attention to pitch adjustments needed on various partials. they're just blindly going through the positons. and they usually get sloppy. one's a bit off, then the next, and it steamrolls from there.
i mean no disrespect to your band director, but i honestly can't think of why a teacher would say such a thing.

I'll take that as a compliment, thanks. If I found someone who needed help, and wanted lessons, and I thought they'd take it seriously, I would take the time out to teach them. But at the moment, no, I don't teach. Just not very many bone players around here, and then by the time you weed out the majority that just don't care, there just isn't a huge student base here.
It doesn't really bother me though. I'm usually too busy doing my own practicing
