ok, i admit it, i`m a trumpet player (yamaha bobby shew) and i`ve been playing about 4 years. To cut a long story short i dont have much money and i want a valve trombone because the trombone player in my hardcorepunk/ska band is leaving and the tone of the trumpet will sit too high over the guitar/bass and drums.

I really dont have the cash for pro bones and there not much need for me to go above high g so no `buy this £2000 bone`....

my question is, do i go for a ok second hand bone (old yam etc) or i`ve seen some very good prices on the cheap jupiter-valve (£350), any recomendations?

I personally think you should learn how to play on a non-valved trombone (I think you mean having like an F-attachment I guess). If you`re gonna take my advice, get a Holton. If you`re not going to, get a Blessing.

Hope that helps,
Nao

By the way, a $115 trombone got me first chair in ASJ Band (All South Jersey), so cheap doesn`t mean its not good.

I think you should learn first on the non trigger trombone, and get the notes down, with a trigger trombone all it does it make it easier to reach some of the low notes, and you can hit many different notes. But, i dont know, i like the King trombones, i bought my first one for like 100 dollars and it was in good shape and it sounded good, My second king i got for 500 so... I dont know, good luck though!

I am an andvanced-intermediate tuba player that is 14 years old. I have played my tuba in orchestra`s, concert bands, wind ensembles, and brass quintets. Approaching High School shortly, I wanted to play in their jazz band, but unfortunetly thede are no tuba parts in that group. I have been looking to buy a valve trombone to play next year. I am looking for something new or used under $1,000. Does anyone have a used one layign around that they are looking to sell?
I have been looking on the internert a lot and checked several music stores. The problem is that many of the music stores don`t have any valve trombones in the store that I can play. The only valve trombone I have played was a King 3B valve trombone. I seem to like that one a lot. My teacher has suggested a King 2B valve trombone, but I have had a lot of trouble finding one. Does anyone have any suggestions? I am trying to find something cheap, but I also like the King so I am not really sure what to do. What does everyoine think about Jupiter or E.M. Winston valve trombones? Please give me any information you can. It would be greatly appreciated.

I think you should get a slide trombone. It`s not that hard to switch--each slide position corresponds to a valve or valve combination, you`ll pick it up in an afternoon or two. Valve trombones are cool, but slide bone is the best sound for ska.

Absolutely get an old horn, not a new one. You can get spectacular old horns for less than some of the new ones of questionable quality. I have an old Getzen trombone that`s perfect for ska gigs--agressive sound, great projection, really nice ax--that I bought for less than $100 including shipping. Plus it`s cool-looking. I can take it to gigs where I wouldn`t want to bring my nice old Conn 6H and it plays great.

WOOAH...how did u know about the ska stuff?? I am actually in a skacore band....but I sing in it. I also do have an old slide trombone and i have been fooling around with it for a month or so. I can play it fairly well....but not well enough to play in stage band next year. At thje high school there is an extreme shortage of trombones and other low brass. I just want to play in the stage band on trombone instead of tuba,. because there are no tuba parts in it. I just can`t play a slide trombone well ebnough to keep up. I have played a valve trombone in the past and it`s the same fingering as one of my tubas, so I can play it a lot better onm a valve trombone than I slide trombone.

Why so much hate for valve trombones? I`ve never tried playing either so I don`t know.

After playing slide trombone for 6 years I was introduced to the valve trombone. I think this is the best instrument to play. I have a King 3b valve trombone and it is the best valve trombone you can get.

In my opinion, a small bore trombone is best for ska playing... I use a jazz horn, the King 2B. And as for the sound of a trumpet sitting too high, why do you think that? Do you plan on soloing?

Definitely a small bore jazz bone would be the best. You don`t need a super expensive one either since ska doesn`t exactly call for pristine tone... :P Ebay may help you also. Good luck and if you ever do any recording you should post a link on here or something.

Slide Trombones i think are better for the typical SKA image. I play trombone in a ska band. I have a Bach 36BO and a Black Maestro Trombone. I got it for cheap off Ebay($137). The reason i got was because the singer was flipping the mic around while we practiced and he let go and it NAILED MY BACH!!!!! big dent and all..now its in the shop.

I mean play what comes easier to you though. I have yet to pick up a valve trombone and i`ve been playing trombone for 5-6 years.
And if you can get a cheap instrument good job. If ur getting a slide trombone and u get a cheap one with little to no slide problems, even more power to you.

Look get a superbone. If your a valve wimp then that is the best way to go. Use the valves for the "im to valve dependant" stuff and the slide for the "good" stuff. No just kidding id look at a king 3b valve bone. you can get a used one for not to much or even get one of thease french made $10.00 ebay things. they play alright. Oh one other thing you might just want to get a real tombone player to play in the band then you could add a trumpet(you) to it and have a whole horn section.
