I sent someone to a music store to get me a violin tuner and the people at the music store talked them into buying a guitar/bass tuner since they didn't have what I asked for. They told her it would work the same way but when I tried to tune my violin with it I put my complete trust in it like an idiot and I ended up with an E string that sounds like a D string. I can't get the E string back the way it was and the tuner says it is in tune. I almost got it back to an E but then I tried to use the tuner again and messed it up again. I don't know if the thing is broken, just won't work with violins, or if I've lost my mind. Please help!

It's an octave too low, that's all. Just keep the note in your head and retune it an octave higher. Or perhaps the tuner will actually play the note for you?

I know what the E needs to sound like. I just can't get it there. Which is the best way to make it go up an octave higher? using the fine tuners or the pegs?

Pegs. You won't get there with adjusters, adjusters are for finer tuning.

Yeah, be careful not to go higher than E though, cuz if you do the string will break.

I found out why it was so hard to tune. There was something wrong with my peg since it's a very old violin. You have to please the peg in to keep the string from becoming loose again. x.x
