I was wondering if there are standard techniqes for fingering- my books say to hold all fingers before the one being used; for example, playing a "g" on the d string in first position, one would hold the ring finger to play the note, and the middle and index as well. I only ask this as it would make changing strings awkward, as one moves not only the one finger, but the whole hand, to place the fingers behind the one being used on the string. Is it reccomended to simply use the finger controlling the note, or should the others behind it be pressed as well?

once you learn vabrato(cant spell) you will find it very hard. yes, keep you fingers down but do not press. you just dont want them sticking up. the only times you keep them pressed down is... well... when you get better you will figure it out.

Does this rule apply at all times? For instance, if once goes from playing open A, to playing G on the D string, does one need to accurately place all three fingers at once, or simply hit G with the ring finger?

...Just popping in. When you switch strings it isn't always necessary to put all fingers down. For example, I'm a fiddler, and when I'm going through my music, Instead of putting my ring, middle, and first fingers, I will just put down my ring and middle down. However, you want your first finger (Index finger) close to your string, ready to put down. If you have any more questions contact me at ig99@charter.net. Yeah, that is what I was doing when playing the D major scale backwards- I was afraid it might be incorrect, but it is easier, as you can place the index after the other two have hit, allowing a more accurate note. Thanks for the advice, and I think I will take you up on that offer

Yes, you are supposed to keep all fingers before the note finger pressed down on the fingerboard. It should not interfere with vibrato. My vibrato is beautiful, just fine and I use that kind of fingering. When you vibrate on a certain note, lets say third finger G on the D string, just use that one finger. Pick all other fingers up, and rock only the third finger on the fingerboard. When you are finished with the vibrato, continue with the regular fingering.

violinist92, i find that your message conflicts with itself. you say keep your fingers down, but than you say use 1 finger for vabrato. you should try to allways do some form of vabrato. and also, there is no need to brag about your playing. many of the people on here are also very good and dont say anything. and nobody cares how good u r. it makes u sound like an amauture.

Please improve your spelling. I am not bragging, I am simply saying that I use the 1 finger vibrato and it makes a beautiful vibrato. My message is not conflicting with itself, it says that you should keep all other fingers down before the finger that you are using to play the note. And then it says that you should (or at least thats the way I was taught) only keep the finger of the note you are vibrating down on the fingerboard. I have never seen any violinist, violist, or cellist (not too experienced with seeing a bassist play) do vibrato with all of the fingers before the note finger down.

Now, a message that conflicts with itself would say you should always put the fingers before the note finger down and then it would later say that you shoudnt.

Also, if this message had any bragging in it, which it doesnt, it would say "the method of vibrato that I use is the best method and I have a beautiful vibrato. Mine is the best and yours sucks." But I didnt, so I dont see how you think that I was bragging about anything
