I am also in the same situation as yourself. I haven't really researched it much yet but I have found these free online video lessons:

No worries Captain, you weren't offensive at all.

I imagine that no amount of self teaching could come close to getting a teacher. However, I don't plan on playing professionally. It's mostly going to be something I do for fun and possibly in recording. Nonetheless, I may still consider a teacher at least to get basic lessons.

Hello!!!!!! Don't give up from a violin! I was in the same situation as you a month ago...I live in a small city where is nooooo teacher of violin. I played piano and guitar for 7 years. After a few weeks of thinking I decided to buy a violin and learn to play it by myself. And you know what? I did it! I am playing it already one month and I am soo happy! I am already playing some litlle songs and partitures, and everything is going just wonderful! One week ago,I accidentally found one girl who knows to play a violin and when she saw me playing, she was very impressed cause I played fine. I just want to tell you that everything is possible when you want that and don't give up! Violin is amazing!

The book I started with is Essential Elements for strings. I think it has a cd with it. Whatever you get, get something with a cd, because that will not only show you the rhythm, but you can also hear if you are out of tune or not. But yes, even if you are just playing for fun, I would recommend a teacher. You can probably find a teacher at your local music shop, or they will know a good teacher that you can go to. A teacher is the easiest way to go.
