Please Guys,
Can all of you quit about violin being the hardest instrument?
There is so much controversy over which instrument is the hardest that it's enough to drive one crazy.
All instruements are beautiful and if you think that one is harder than another, then your talent at being ignorant is TOP NOTCH.
Seriously, all instruments are extremely hard and challenging. If you think they are easy to master, I expect that you aren't challenging yourself much.
Thanks.

i know what you mean but some people (me included) have had to work really hard to get where they are today and play only reasonably. it is something that you have to work at quite a bit i think and people who say it is hard have been there before. yes music and instruments are beautiful but i dont think it is ignorance, i mean some violinists also play piano and guitar and lots of other instruments and probably put the same level of work in. so sure it is annoying, but it is kinda true. we don't say it to scare people off but to tell them that it isnt a walk in the park

I play several instruments, not all of them, but violin does take a lot of time to learn. I'm not saying that it is THE hardest; that statement is such a generalization, it could never be true that any one instrument is truly harder than all the rest. however, some instruments are harder to learn than others, and I would say violin is a harder instrument. there is often much more time invested into learning a piece than to learn the same piece at the same level on a different instrument. Please also keep in mind that when people reply "oohhhh, violin is the hardest instrument".....you can ask them if they can play every instrument in the world! And if they say no, (which they should) you can ask them.....How do you know for sure?
Cheers!!

I cant say that its the hardest instrument to play, since violin is the only instrument I play so far. It has been said that the violin is the hardest instrument to master, and that I can definately believe.

I really do understand what you are all trying to tell me; however, I don't believe that any instrument is harder than the other. And no, none of them are a mere walk in the park, it just depends how you convert that instrument.

When you get to the top of the line toughest pieces by people like Rachmaninoff, piano can get unbelievably hard. Some masters of piano can't even play some of his pieces. Each hand is doing something independently , going up and down the keyboard. I'd say piano.

I'd say that it depends on the person. It's true that for one person, the violin may be the toughest one they've encountered. For another, the violin may be a piece of cake, and it's the oboe that gives them grief. Which instrument is the most challenging? That depends on the individual playing the instrument.

Well, I can play all the string instruments, not as well as I would like to, and i can say for sure violin is challenging, but definitely not the most difficult. Cello is pretty hard, and so is the oboe and french horn. I would say the hardest insrument to learn is the voice...if you don't have a good voice, then that makes learning much harder.

But then again, my singing is pretty terrible, so i guess i wouldnt know!!

i would like to say that a lot of people are very ignorant and dont even know what are they talking about when they are saying their instrument is the hardest and others are not because EVERY instrument is hard to play. but i cant put every instrument on the same level of difficulty. even if they are all hard to master, different instruments ask different skills (some more, some less) it also depends how many talents does a person have 4 that instrument. some may have more so they found it easier to play and some have less so they found it very difficult. i also find very annoying when people are comparing difficulty of an instrument by how hard is to read notes while playing that instrument(e.g. piano). im not saying notes are not important. its completely opposite of that. notes are very important part of music, but when we think about it, there are people who play without notes. learning notes is a completely different skill we need to learn while playing an instrument and is just natural to know it while playin an instrument. thats why in european schools, there is a special class of theory where you learn ONLY theory, and then theres instrument class where is expected of you to know the notes while playing (they dont learn you how to read notes but only how play) i know that because, most of my music training i spent in europe and a year and something ago i moved to north america. i found it here that people dont appreciate instruments so much and their difficulty because they are not expected to play the instrument well or at least dont have such a pressure of playing an instrument well as it is in europe where two instruments is maximum for playing, only because its really hard to learn how to play well only one instrument, not talking about the other. i also find very annoying when people say violin is really easy because its not. its one of the hardest to play and theres a lot of reasons why. for e.g. how to play with the bow ( you have to know how to play one string while not striking the other string, you need to play your bow on the right angle, you need to hold your bow precisely so you can get the right sound, also you need to move your bow not to hard or to light so you dont get the squeaky sound) how to hold your violin (it has to be on the right angle with your neck) how to move your fingers ( you need to hit the right notes and its really hard because theres not labeled notes for u like it is on guitar or piano) you also need a very good ear to help you in hitting the right notes because for people with no ear or some its impossible to play the violin. thats why at least in european schools, teachers test people who want to learn ANY string instrument (their singing and how well they hit the notes) i took violin for an example because thats the instrument i play and am most familiar with. there are other instruments who are maybe harder and im not saying violin or any other string instrument is the hardest because people, like i said, have different talents so they may find some instruments easier than the others. but what i want to ask is for people to stop saying how violin (or any other instrument)is easy just only because it looks easy or sounds easy because thats not true. your excuse can be that you played violin for, i dunno 3-4 year or whatever and you find it easier than for example drums but honestly, the only reason you find it easy is because you never bothered to properly learn the instrument. i can say with 100% of certainty that your playing of the instrument you found easy and then quit is not even close to being decent. so in future we can agree that every instrument is hard on its on way, and if you think its not, start playing that instrument and learn it properly so lets see how much time will it pass before you master it.

I personally don't think the hardest instrument is the violin.(It was my first attempt to learn to play music). However, I do happen to think that any instrument that can play more than one note at a time(piano, guitar, violin,viola,cello,harp.....) are considerably more difficult than single-note instruments. The way the post author mentioned it, it sounded like he thought that the flute and the guitar are equally difficult. Considering the fact that you have to control multiple strings sometimes playing completely different melodies(whereas on the flute you can only finger one note at a time) I'd say the guitar should be considered harder.

I may not agree with that for the simple fact that while guitar requires multiple fingerings, the flute requires much more knowledge as far as emochure and air support, along with lip strength and endurance.

The whole "which instrument is the hardest" debate is way too general. For some people, it may in fact be the violin. However, other people may find playing the violin to be a cakewalk, and that it's the french horn that's giving them fits.

It all depends on your individual abilities and your perspective lens.

Does it really matter which instrument is the hardest? Surely the most important thing is to just enjoy learning it...

Yeah, I agree. Who cares? Making music is fun! It doesn't matter whose instrument is or is not the hardest.

Really? I think violin isn't the hardest. every instruments have their own complication. For example violin. Its complication is how to read, strike the bow, and use my little finger(it's short!T.T)for me. I had tried to played piano but at the first time I played it I distressed and quit in just ONE day! But I still love piano anyway. Ever time I look at a pro violin player, I get jealous and say to my self,"Come on Bella, you've to be like them! work your fingers pow!" then I feel I want to play violin...
I love music... especially violin. that's why I try and try till I can. Things like that can make you play instrument as easy as walking. So every instrument aren't that hard if you have will...
(O yea, I'm Bella, a 13th years old first grade violin player, nice to meet ya all)
