right I`m about to do the Grade 8, and I have choice between two bows varying in price, the cheaper is octagonal and has "werner" stamped on it whilst the more expensive one is round. I`ve tested the bows to the best of my knowledge, bending the stick inwards if it passes the hairs it`s weak, bouncing, weight and clarity of sound. Do I need to test for any more properties? how much would you pay (in pound sterling) for a bow? and basically any other bow shopping advice would be great. Thanks.

Dear Marcus
After having left violin playing for almost 15 years I have dicided to start again. (did originaly complete grade 8 trinity college) I seem to though have a problem with my bowing. In playing my bow seem to bounce very rapidly on the strings to almost create a continious spiccato effect. How can I counter this.(maybe more preasure?)

I would be most appreciative of your help.

Kind regards
Jackie

Hey Jackie,
I`m not Marcus but I might be able to help you with you`re bow problem. You need a better bow grip. To start off, you should put your thumb on the frog. This gives more support. I did this when I was a beginner.

Hey, I`ve done violin for about...I can`t remember, 8 years (although I`m not very good). I`ve done a little bit of double bass (2 terms). The only thing I can say is it gives me blisters! Lol, but the most important thing to remember I suppose (not being a bass expert of any kind, but...) that the violin is the only string instrument where your left thumb goes on the `other side` of the other fingers. I kept trying to reach around when in bass its meant to be behind

Good luck!

Could the Pro help me, Marcus?    18:47 on Saturday, November 30, 2002

I purchased several music sheet books for young violinists.

The problem is that I can play the musics but I have no
pianists to accopany me in playing the musics. I found
only few music pieces for solo violin I can play without
piano accopanying and it still sounds beautifully.

Please, could you send me some mushic sheets for solo violin
I can play alone without piano accopanying? The 2 pieces
I have is Thais Meditation by J. Massenet and Souvenir by
Franz Drdla. They both indeed have piano accopanying but I
still can play alone. The Swan is also beautiful, but lacking
the piano accopanying, there is no water for the swan to swim.

I need some pieces that are more joyful, fast space, and brighter
than the pieces listed above. Traumeri is very slow, sad and easy.
Please, send me about 2 pieces that are not more difficult than
the ones I listed here. I really appreciate your offer.
