Hey Marcus, I need some help on my vibrato. it sounds okay, but it doesn`t sound sweet and beautiful like professional violinists` do. It sounds okay, but the sound comes out kind of rough and scratchy. Maybe I am vibratoing wrong. PLease help me!!!

I missed how long you`ve been playing...but I need a pro`s help. I`ve been playing for forever...since I was small. I moved to Russia when I was 8...spent 4 years there, had a great teacher who used to come 3 times a week for 2,3, even 4 hours at a time. (She was the first violinist in the Moscow Chamber Orchestra) Then I moved to London for a couple years...had an okay teacher there, and now I`m back in the US and am learning from the former first violinist of the Pakistani (whatever it is called) orchestra. I`ve only met with him a few times...his name has slipped, but anyway, he`s an awesome guy. Anyway, he`s been coming 3 to 4 times a week, but only for an hour or so. Is this enough?! I`ve always spent hours with my teachers before...but he seems to think this is enough. He also says that practicing is great, but in his lessons I`ll probably learn more than what I would have practicing for a week...meaning that I might not need to spend as much time as I do. Anyway, I`m wondering how long is too long. I spent 3 hours on the violin today...which seems pretty practical...should I go with this, 3 times a week an hour at a time? Or is this not a great idea? I know this guy`s a great violinist, and I don`t want to second guess him. I guess I`m looking to hear what your experience has been. Thanks,

And I don`t know what the American equivalent of my level is...but I`ve played in some concerts in Moscow...smaller things, but televised, nonetheless. So I`m pretty serious. My teacher (the Pakistani) seems to think that someday in the not too distant future I`ll be able to play with him on BBC and stuff, but I`m not quite there yet, to say the least! Heck, I had a year`s break from playing...it`ll take a little while to get back to where I was!

Well, seeing that the thread moderator is not here...I will answer one question about vibrato...I happened to read a post regarding this...It`s wrong to wriggle yr finger when u do vibrato, pls. dun do that...Relax and move yr wrist instead...It should be the wrist, and not the fingers...If not, you`ll end up with a squeezed/ tight sound. The vibrato is only able to resonate and travel if u do it correctly with the wrist. Thanks

When U say make a violin sound like a clarinet, I guess u mean make the tone colour refine...Yes, some violins do sound like clarinets in their higher range...That has to do with the tone colour of the instrument itself, and the way u bow and do yr vibrato. Set the bow gently and do not do a vibrato that is too forceful. And to sound really smooth, u`ve gotta learn to join yr bow properly. U can`t really sound like the clarinet if yr violin`s tone colour is not refined enough, but this is how u can make it better. Thank U.
