My violin teacher keeps telling me I should either bow with the bow hair flat on the strings or tilt the bow away from the bridge. I tilt the bow towards the bridge and don't hear any difference no matter how the bow is tilted.

Is my teacher full of hot air?

Your teacher is right. You can get the same type of sound if you tilt the bow toward the bridge, but it's a little more difficult. It's a lot easier to tilt the bow toward the fingerboard when playing.

There's nothing wrong either way, just don't pull too much hair away from the strings.

When doing double stops however you'll want to use all the hair.
