Pardon for my lack of knowledge about this grade. I don`t have any music background. I am an university student majoring in engineering. I took violin since I was freshmen just because my friend dragged me to the strings club. Now my friends had given up playing violin already :D.

So back to my question, Where I can take the examination to get my grade, because since the first day I took my violin, I have never been graded. Do I have to go to music school before graded? I realise that my skils and techniques grow so slow, since I don`t have private teacher and my hectic days at uni doesn`t give much time to practice. Besides that if I practise in my room at dorm, my roomate and all the student will complain just because the noise that come out from my violin . I hope you can reply.... thanks..

I suppose it varies depending on where you live. I`ve never been tested either, but I know I can handle playing Grade 4/5 music, even if I`m rather shakey on technique.

I`m from Canada and and am following the Royal Conservatory of Music guidelines. They exist for all the basic instruments (at least I think so...piano, violin/viola/cello, flute, oboe, saxophone for sure.)

However, your music department (in Germany?) would be able to tell you.

Ok. Since u dun take violin as a major or minor study in the Conservortory or University, then u cannot be graded by their internal crediting systems. But, u can take as a private candidate for any of these boards : ABRSM, Trinity, London College, Guildhall, AMEB and so on. These are very recognised examination boards to which their certs will be accepted globally. There should be a local representative for one of these boards near u. Just go to the website to check it out. For yr infornation, Grade 1-Grade8 are student grades. Thereafter followed by ATCL/Dip, LTCL/LRSM, FTCL/FRSM and so on. A FRSM is equivalent to a fourth yr study in a music degree. Theory wise...AMUCTCL, LMUSTCL, FMUSTCL and so on. What comes after is HMus and DMus in which hardly anyone will take. Thank YOU.

DW, thanks for your explanation. Although i don`t understand all the abreviation you were listed. So to get my grade I have go to either conservatory or those boards you mention above. Hope after my graduation I can take this to know my grade. By the way if a student can play a score which needs shifting to 3rd/4th position, and do vibrato, so this student should be fall into which grade?
