Hi folks,
I`m starting off in Violins and for a beginner the range is limited. Would anyone know of patient and good instructors in the Melbourne area of Australia?

Someone who will help me pick a Violin as well as teach me how to read music...I`ve got the jist of it but I`ll need to apply the theory to learn it.

i`m having troubles finding a good one in Perth too - lots of `group` lessons with an average instructor, but no good one-on-one training with a talented teacher.

try the Sydney string center (www.violins.com.au). i know they have a great listing of teachers in NSW, they may have some for VIC.

LOL...Perth! Good luck! Just kidding. I`m going to visit a few shops this weekend and buy the Suzuki book as well as a few others to read before I get my violin.

What brands have you found in this great brown land of ours of which offer beginner violins of good value and tone? My second purchase is going to be a mute!

practically none. I`m actually about to place an order for a Gliga violin. I couldn`t find any decent places here in perth that had anything other than $100 cardboard quality beginners, or $5000 advanced fine violins.

great Gliga student version (much much better than chinese student violins) as an outfit with case, upgraded dominiant strings, fine adjusters and a professional bow, with shipping to Perth comes to AU$370 - great exchange rate with the US at the moment.

take a look at www.violinslover.com if ya want.

Under $400...good deal. I`ll look into it. All I`ve found are Stentors and I don`t like the sound at all.

I began learning violin about 5 years ago when i was 12, and my parents bought me a $200 beginner`s from a small music/instrument pawn sort of shop (I live in bendigo, and we bought it in castlemaine... so it`s sort of proof that you can buy them anywhere...) What`s the problem with starting off with an instrument worth only this amount? There`s nothing wrong with my violin... I plan to study it properly next year (when i`ve finished vce) and yeah, i`d probably kill for a better violin than the one i`ve got, but hey, you have to have the talent to make it sound good anyway, and no matter how much you spend, you`re still going to sound sh*te (excuse me, but) until you can play properly. And who`s to say that you`re even going to want to keep it up anyway? Look in things like the trading post to find something cheap. Even buy that "cardboard-quality" one you`ve seen and fit it with Dominant strings for $70. It`ll sound quite good, believe me.

Hey Amy!
How`s the Shamrock?
I just had a Gliga delivered and I`m already practising away...I might be old but I`m not fickle. I wanted something that will carry me for a few years that was a good stepping block and would also act as backup once I upgrade and the Gliga is definatley it. So far a friend has been teaching me but I look to start classes in a few weeks.

I`ve got a lot to practice to get to your level.
Cheers

I splurged and got the Gems 1. The reason I was able to get it here so quick was that my sister`s boyfriend was on the Eastern Seaboard for a few weeks so I had it delivered to him and he carried it through as hand luggage.

i was gonna get the Gems as well, but finances dictated the level i could go to.

Hey Alex.
Sorry, didn`t mean to imply that you were fickle because of your age or anything... i guess you could just say that i`m a little bitter that some people (particularly a best friend of mine who is older than me) can just afford to go out and buy excellent instruments that they cant play (and that was just an assumption i made...unfair generalisation or something) and i`m just plodding away on my "Art`s Music" cheapo violin. ah well, adds characer, and at least it IS a cheap little thing cos i`ve covered it in artwork... there`s not really any value to diminish on it . How`s the Shamrock? The pub is great as far as i can tell, or else i`ve missed what you were saying altogether. But how would i really know, i`m underage
Cheers
