It is very difficult and time consuming and a starter violin costs $200.00 and lessons are about $15 an hour.

$15 an hour? I`m moving to your town! I live in a small city in the middle of nowhere, and I pay $50 an hour (with a certified Suzuki instructor). I had a few lessons with slightly less expensive teachers, but they definitly paled in comparison to my current instructor. But in my (and many other players) experience, a good student violin will cost your upwards of $600 - I`m talking about one you won`t outgrow in 6 months; one that will compliment your playing for the first few years.

I just found this site, not subscribed but, I play violin.

I`m 11, in England. I`m going on to year 7 in September, and to my new secondary school. I`ve been playing violin since I was 6. I`ve just taken my grade 1 and waiting for my results.

If you`re willing to stick to it, then I think you`ll get far. Lots of people that played alongside me gave up. That`s why they haven`t got as far as me.

The violin is one of the hardest instruments to play, but it just takes a lot of work and practise. I find though that when you start, it`s so funny, you don`t know how to hold it, what to do with the bow etc. Now look at me, my teacher believes I can go on to do great things.

But it`s well worth it.

I`m 13 years old and I`ve played since 8. I can`t say I`m very good yet, but it`s mainly because I don`t practice enough. I began doing half an hour every night and it`s amazing how quickly I actually got stuff, even if I`m not that brilliant yet. If you`re learning violin you should practice a lot to begin with, I just wish I had.

It depends on how much you really love it.

hey Matt just go for it! i`m an HSC student and i never took any musical instrument tuitions in my life but i just love violin and already signed up on a student course so that as soon as my exams are over i can play this magical instrument. Like you i`m scared a bit about how hard it is but nothing will discourage me from doing something that i really want to do. Others might tell you that it`s very hard or i don`t know know what discouraging things but if you really love it and want to do it then nothing should stop you. Good luck dear!

ok well im 15 and ive been playing for 5 years. i picked it up really easy at first. after the first years learning the harder stuff is a little difficult. its probably a little more difficult then wind instruments. its worth the time and effort though trust me.

My advise, don`t concern yourself with the questions you`re asking. I made that mistake myself and regret it. I`m 47 now and finally learning, as I practice, all I think about is the time I lost because I didn`t just do it. If you have the desire to play, then play. Don`t worry about how long it will take you to be as good as you want to be, the sooner you start, the sooner you`ll be there.

I understand how hard it is learning to play the violin (just look at the number of replies on the topic) We have recently completed the development of a website for a client who has invented something which all students and teachers may be interested in - and before you start sending me e-mails (for or against this product) I am simply telling you it`s there - take a look at www.fingerplacements.co.uk

All the best to you students of that wonderful instrument.

Peter

Matt, I`m a 48 year old single parent, this year my 7 year old took up the violin in school. It was always a dream of mine, so I bought one too. On just my income I can`t afford lessons, so I practice a about an hour to two hours a night. I already know 6 songs including "On the wings of a snow white dove". I am far from perfect, I can play the notes, but I have yet to learn how to make the notes flow, but I`m loving learning. The point is your age is irrelevant, unless you keep putting it off. Every year you put it off is one more year without learning something you want to do.

Hello all, I`m a so young 56 y.o. boy (boy??) tha has begin to learn to play the violin, my firt lesson was just yesterday and I only know how to scracht the strings with the arc but... I think that it`s a marvelous sound I extract from the strings and I also have in my mind that in a mores or less next future I`ll try to play some more complicated notes all together.
Hard to learn?, it`s as hard as everything to learn but new!.
Cheers,
F.

hey people,
got myself a violin last few days. Used to play when I was younger but then it was kindsa forced on me and I rebelled like the morning star but not it`s a choice and a love. Learned my first song in 3 days, ode to joy, but having a bit of trouble remembering all the sheet music, the timing is a left handed weasel catcher to me. Someone help out a dude before he sucks on a shotgun and advise me on a dam good theory book or website?
Cheers
Gav
