Hi!I`m 17, and I began learning violin about 6 months ago. I`ve advanced extremely quickly--Right now I`m working on Rimsky-Korsakov`s: The Flight of the Bumble-Bee. Granted I already played a handful of instruments before I started, but if you truly want to learn then you can! Just make sure you practice everyday! Good Luck!

It`s great to see so many folks getting started playing violin/fiddle! If you`re having fun...and learning.. and having FUN.... then go for it! I love playing fiddle tunes and enjoy learning various style of fiddle playing. My goal... is to be able to go to any sort of jam and... at least half way fit in.

Hey as nuts as this sounds I really want an electric violin I have wanted to play the violin for a long time, and the truth is I don’t know a lot about the violin when people say its hard, how hard do they mean? Because my friend wants to start up a heavy metal band and wants a violin in it but the thing is how long would it take until u could perform? and I know I’m getting ahead of myself.

The thing about learning a musical instrument is that it never ends. There is no point at which you can stop and say now you`ve learned the instrument. How long it would take to attain enough proficiency to perform in public for money rather depends on how much nerve you have and how much or little respect you have for the instrument. If your friend were asking, I`d advise him to recruit an already-proficient classically trained violinist. As for you, I think persons completely new to a particular instrument or to music in general should not begin with a specific performance goal in mind. Play for several years, and THEN start tentatively thinking about what you might eventually do with your violin. Also: don`t start on electric violin.

On the other hand, if the band is strictly an amateur affair, restricting its performances to your friend`s garage, just pick up a violin and start goofing around with it. Knock yourself out. What`s the problem?

Oh, it`s just that the electric violin is not a point of departure, at least not yet. The violin has four hundred or so years of tradition, of violin culture, behind it, and the electric violin hasn`t even been standardized. If you develop an appreciation of the violin, you`ll have something against which to compare the various contending electric violin designs.

well thanks for your advice. how long have u been playing? and do u know a good brand of violin? I guess the reason I wanted a electric violin is then I wont disturb my mum when I`m trying to play it. Sorry i really have a lot of questions and I most likely will ask a lot more when I think of them

If you read through the thread called "Electric Violin Inquiry" (currently on page two of this forum) you`ll see that some of us are not convinced an electric violin is going to be all that quiet. Just last night a new electric guitar neighbor appeared. I could hear him easily everywhere in the building. (I`ll let someone else take a swing at your other questions.)

I have been playing violin for 3 years now, and it is no doubt one of the hardest instruments in the world to learn. But since you already know how to read notes that helps ALOT. And if some people are saying its too late... ignore them. It is never too late to learn. Just make sure you`re committed

Hi! How do I choose a violin. I want to play. But there is 1/4 2/4 3/4 4/4 violins and I do not know which one I should get. I am 12 years old and in 7th grade any help appreciated. Also what books should I get and any tips thanks!

you should probably get a full size.... even if it is a little big at first, trust me you'll grow into it quick.

! started learning quite recently and i'm not finding it particularly hard! (I'm 26 years old!) Its very different though! (I played flute at school) The only problem is that the lessons are quite expensive and you might get the wrong technique if you try and teach yourself! I have a wonderful Gliga Gems violin though which cost around £250.
