Hello,

I am studying the cello on my own for a while now and I have a question about the "JP Duport Etude no 8 in D" ....
I heard a recording of that etude from Janos starker, and I just don`t understand how it can be played so polyfonic on a cello.
How do you play for example on the a string a D (half note, 4th finger) and play at the same time eight notes on the D string, witout affecting that fluid D on your a string? It seems impossible to me ... (-:
Does anyone know the principle behind this ?
(I think some cellists will understand about wich etude I al talking )

Thank`s a lot !!

How do you play for example on the A-string a D (half note, 4th finger) and play at the same time eight notes on the D string, witout affecting that fluid D on your a string?

#1. Can you play the A-string and the D-string at the same time, YES?
#2.Can you play a half-note on the A-string and the D-string at the same time?

-What you do is play the half-note D on the A-string and SLUR the other 8th notes on the D string.

What are the notes on the D-string anyways?

I haven’t had time yet to really get a good look at it and play it but,
I took a look at the music you emailed me. Well I just hate those weird fingerings, but I guess that is why it`s in Adagio because it`s a slow 76 beats per minute. Well I personally think that the sheet music is incomplete. Almost no up or down bow markings and fingerings that is necessary. I guess you could write them in.

Anyways, one of the tricks is to play Adagio, but use as little bow as possible because you will be playing several notes per bow stroke.

It`s probably better to play the top part of the line first and then start again and play the bottom part of the line, then go at it. For a slow piece, it`s VERY HARD.

I`ll Email you later and see if I can play and record a little piece of it on my computer.I have never done that before LOL
