I play the violin, and I would like to learn cello. Does the cello have the same fingerings as the violin? is the cello hard to learn? if I were to start playing, I would be teaching myself. Would that work, or is it necessary to have a teacher? Thanks

The fingerings are not the same but are easy enough to learn. I know several violinists who have also taught themselves to play cello at a moderate level.

THE CELLO IS THE EASIEST OF THE STRING,AFTER FEW WEEKS I WAS MAKING PEOPLE CRY AND DOING DECENT VIBRATOS AND I HAD NEVER TOUCHED A STRING INSTRUMENT BEFORE,BUT INSTEAD OF BUYING A CELLO I HAD THE STUPIDEST IDEA THAT I COULD BE AS GOOD AT VIOLIN(GREAT MISTAKE, I CAN`T EVEN HOLD THE THING RIGHT!)NOW I HAVE A NEW MAN MADE VIOLIN FROM CHINA ONLY TO REALIZE THAT I AM A GOD DAMN CELLO PRODIGY...SO ANYBODY WANTS A UNIQUE VIOLIN???i could sell it nearly two thousands but i`m giving it away for 500$ (i got it 3 days ago)this is no joke it`s a good deal!!!

I`m 20 years old. I have an intermediate or higher level of guitar, but I would like to learn how to play cello. My girlfriend is a musician and she told me that I have a REALLY good ear. The thing is, even though I know how to play guitar, I do not know how to read notes. why?! because notes scare me! I just want to play for the fun of it. WOuld it be too embitious to start the cello on my own?! Is it going to help me play cello if I know how to play guitar? let me know!
ThanX so much
Chris

I play the violin, and I would like to learn cello.
--Thats funny because I play the cello and I`m learning how to play the violin.

Does the cello have the same fingerings as the violin?
--No, the violin is index, middle, and ring finger(123123). The cello fingering is index, ring and pinky finger(134134). Oh and you hold the cello bow like you are holding a full glass of water.

is the cello hard to learn?
--That depends on you.

if I were to start playing, I would be teaching myself. Would that work, or is it necessary to have a teacher?
--That depends on how good you are on the violin. Can you read cello music. The middle bar is the D-string. the top bar is the A-string, the bottom bar is the G-string.

Hi...

I`m a violist and then i started playing cello and now i`m cello grade 8 and violin grade 6. so you can seee, violin for 3 years and cello 3, that cello is easier. many people have advice me to drop one or the other but seriously i love both! ok. so i would definitely encourage you to start. But i think somethings ppl say they dun like the cello is because their instrument is not good enogh. eg cant produce a stradivarius sound. so umm.. what i`m trying to say is that if you want to take up cello, dun give up. if you stop at a beginner instrument then its a pity cuz you`ll never noe what a really GOOD cello could do to you. umm ya start with a beginner cello around 300?600? then find a hand made one around a few thousands if you want.. lol

I`ve been playing to cello for about four years and recently took up the bass, which has different strings than the cello, (just like the violin) and what I found was the hardest thing, was remembering that where I the G string on a cello was, was really an A on the bass and such. It becomes frustrating, but the cello is a wonderful instrument and not as easy as people might think, so give it a try, and you may find that you like it.

Yeh, I`m interested in learning the cello too. I play the violin and let me say that is damn difficult and it takes years to master the instrument.
I was amazed to hear on this forum that the sheet reading is different to violin, since I play violin, I thought all stringed instruments were identical with sheet reading lol.
The only prb is that cellos are really expensive where I live (South Africa), are there any cheap but good quality type cellos available?

I am 12 years old and I play the viola the cello, the bass and the violin. I learned them all within 1 year. I learned them all at the beginning of this year. The cello does not have the same strings nor the same fingerings.

I used to play violin....I was not very good....I started cello like a year ago and now im in the top high school Chamber Orchestra. This was not super-easy.....you have to practice a lot. If you like practicing, which I did, no problemo!

Cello is a very beautiful instrument and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to play it.

I just started playing the violin and can`t get the instrument to stop squeaking! I`m pretty sure that I`m following all of the procedures correctly. Can somebody perhaps list ways in which you can prevent squeaking or how it happens?

I am a Chinese girl. I have learned cello for 7 years. And I also learn violin. I prefer cello because it has more pleasent voice. But cello is too big to take out.
In China those who learn cello are more less than those who learn violin. Who can email me? We should talk something about cello.
