Hello everyone, I`ve been a tuba player for about year now, and have advanced very quickly with it, i started around february, back then I didnt even know how to learn bass clef, and by august I was already marching with the band. I`d like to learn a more melodic instrument, since most of the time I practice I do so by myself, and tuba parts arent exactly the most exciting to play alone (don`t get me wrong, I <3 Tuba).

I was Interested in learning to play the cello, but I also love the sound of the oboe (I`m aware it takes longer to get beautiful sound off an oboe than off a cello) The school band has an oboe, which nobody plays, and I get along with the teacher so I could borrow an oboe from the school, the orchestra also has a full set of string instruments, but I hardly know that teacher and dont know about borrowing a cello from her.

I am very unsure on which instrument to play, and was hoping you guys could clear my thoughts up a bit.

I`m an oboe player who wants to switch to cello, but i`d say Cello. Oboe is expensive and takes alot of dedication and it takes a while to get good tone. Reading the other cleff might be hard too

Hell, take both if at all possible. I haven`t really played the oboe, but I have a couple times, and hell, its fun too!
when you`re used to just kinda `tap tap tap` and the notes are in tune as long as the instruments are in tune, you might be up for something a little different with the cello... especially if you`re starting on one with no stickers or markings or anything. I originally played clarinet and alto sax, but now I`m mainly in love with my cello. It has great range, you get to play in all clefs, ect. Though then the oboe would be a new clef and the fingering there is different from a brass, for sure...

So in short, I`d go with both. But then you may just end up like me playing too many instruments to keep up with (and then forget how to play them all in 5 minutes! =P )
Theres my little unhelpful pratter...

MUST PLAY CELLO!!!!!!!

It`s better than the oboe because it`s bigger, and in my mind, bigger is better. Besides, if you`re like me, and you play the tuba, you`ll probably be afraid to push down hard on the oboe keys because the instrument is so small. Me, I`m in orchestra, I play the cello, and I`m afraid if I touch a violin, I`ll crush it because its so small

take up the bassoon.... -________-
1) it`s a challenge (no one should have the right to say 13 thumb keys isn`t the least bit challenging to get the hang of)

2) the beautiful reedy sound of the oboe. yep. the basson sounds so awesome in the higher registers. i believe it can reach the F at the top of the treble clef. i`ve never tried it. lol.

3) the powerful bass sound of the tuba. a bassoon can reach the A# three ledger lines below the staff. hey, it`s no tuba, but the bassoon can go pretty low.

4) now, go get yourself a bassoon.

a `soon would be freaking awesome, I like it more than I like the oboe, but I have no possible means to even get near one.

I tried to borrow one at the national culture institute a couple years ago, but I had to pay like a $3000 deposit plus like 100 bucks a month. For that price I can buy myself a good cello AND an oboe.

i`ve played most woodwinds for different ensambles in high school as well as trumpet, violin, guitar, and bells (for drumline). i`m also getting ready to learn cello.
personally, i would suggest oboe. i say this because it is the more expensive instrument and since you can borrow an oboe from the school now you should while it`s still free. the only concern would be messing up your embouchure for tube. i didn`t have any real problems with this when is started playing trumpet though.
