hey i`ve been playing bass guitar for a while but i was asked to join a band where i have to be able to read notes and i have been playing tab. what would be the fastest and easiest way to learn how to read the notes?

I`m in a band too. They must have really needed a bass player badly because they took me in and I have`nt been playing for a year yet! Anyway, here are the lines and space for Bass clef:

Look at the line names. the bottom letter is a G, then the next line is a B. Going upward, the lines go G B D F A. For the spaces: A C E G

I`ve been playing the bass for about two months but mostly by ear and photographic memory. I can reconize the notes, but I am kind of shaky with them. I was trying to find a bass notes/chords poster, like what they have for the guitar, but I cant find any. My biggest promblem is, if you`re reading a music sheet and it says to play an "A", but there are no tabs, how do you know on what string to play it considering there is more than 1 a note on the bass?

I was wondering if anyone could just tell me what a note means on a tab when it goes like 3/5. the dash is really throwin me off :P.

by the way i usually just play the first A that comes up in that situation, the lowest fret. It all depends on the tone of the song.

3/5 means to play 3, then slide your finger up the string while holding it down to 5
