I looked , don't have a clue for you....but it does seem sorta' familiar???????
I spent a few yrs. with an oil company in Saudi Arabia in the late 60's... I think I might have seen something like that.. ?

It looks like a homemade Shamisen, A Japanese Instrument with three or four strings (three being more common). During WW2, when materials and craftsmen were in short supply many were Home-Built; I have one that was made by a student in an internment camp in Idaho during the war. Many were made of "recycled" materials, and are often mistakenly listed as "antique".
