i dont really find much of Beethoven`s works technically a killer..but..the Sonate Quasi Fantasia`s(Moonlight..which I prefer not to call it) 3rd movement is the hardest of the sonate technically...but the first and second movement are wayy more musical ...no matter how over played the first movement is, not that many play it perfect..shyt i cant even play that 1st movement. Also..to play the second movement u have to think of it like a string quartet..typical of many Beethoven minuet and trios.

Who else is finding this topic boring. It has been going on for ages, I know because I looked at it some time before christmas and this is about the only time I have been on this year. It is pointless as there is no hardest piece. It is simply personal opinion whether or not you find a piece difficult.

Also there was another one a while ago that was almost the same as this so this one has absolutely no point whatsoever.

And one final note: THE ORIGINAL POSTER HAS NOT BEEN HERE IN OVER A YEAR AND I DOUBT HE EVEN CARES ANYMORE SO PLEASE LET THIS TOPIC LYE AND LEAVE IT ALONE. NO DOUBT THAT IT HAS SUFFERED ENOUGH!!!!

I haven`t read through all the replies but perhaps no one mentioned Charles-Henri Alkan. Look at Le Tambour Bat aux Champs, (I think it means `the drums on the street` or something like that) Op. 50, No. 2.

Guys,

You`re all missing the ball on this one. Being a piano authority (yes that is self declared), I`m going to list some of the hardest conventional pieces, and then list the truly most difficult music ever composed.

Hardest conventional music:

Piano Concerto No. 3 - Rachmaninov
Gaspard de la Nuit - Ravel
Islamey - Balakirev
Sonata No. 1 - Rachmaninov
Alkan Concerto for solo piano

Hardest music ever written

Evryali - Iannis Xenakis
Tracts - Richard Barrett
Godowsky`s 54 Etudes
Sorabji Sonatas 0-5
Opuc Clavicembalisticum - Sorabji
English Country Tunes - Michael Finnissy

You guys should google some of those pieces. There have only been a handful of pianists in history to record them - namely, Marc-André Hamelin, Geoffrey Douglas Madge, Michael Habermann, Ian Pace, and Yonty Solomon. I doubt anyone on this forum could touch these pieces including myself. I happen to be working on Prokofiev`s Opus 11 D minor Toccata, Chopin`s Winter Wind Etude and a few others. Enjoy!
