The hardest (solo) piece is easily Liszt`s own transcription of Totentanz (Dance of Death). The hardest concerto is def. Prokofiev 2.

For more reference, see the previous thread on this same topic. Nobody has seemed to read that since most of the stuff people are saying is repeated (and grossly misled btw).

well, Chopins etudes can get pretty difficult - Op 4 and 5. Op 12 is the revolutionary, but it really isn`t that hard, just takes alot of practice. you could tackle Gershwin`s Rhapsody in Blue. If you`re a classical pianist you`ll probably find jazz to be both challenging and interesting. good luck!

Ever heard of Ligti?    15:25 on Sunday, February 22, 2004

I guess a 32-year pianist knows all the hard pieces of the old classical composers; maybe you don`t know Ligeti, he`s a Hungarian composer (think he`s still alive) who has written some pretty difficult piano pieces as far as I know.

i dont think there is a song that is hard for some1 that has been playing for 32 yrs, but i do have some suggestions if u havent tried them yet. the hammerklavier by beethoven is difficult. the hungarian rhapsody no. 2 and definately the totentanz both by liszt r complicated pieces. if u can play those, then y not just play all 32 of beethoven`s sonatas in order or if uve done that, play chopin`s complete album. (that is if u havent done that either).

my best recommendation tho is to just forget difficulty and play songs u like.

i forgot to tell u that u can get these pieces from the already posted website
www.sheetmusicarchive.net

the totentanz comes as a duet tho and u can only get 2 songs a day. (which i think is good cuz it would take me months to learn 1 of beethoven`s harder sonatas.)

Alright, I`d think that a guy who`s been playing three times as long as I have should know what`s hard and what`s not, unless you were just screwing around for the majority of your life. When I have had 32 years of experience, I`m positive that I`d be able to tackle any piece, much less know which one is the hardest (technically, not necessarily musically). You ought to be good enough to listen to a piece and determine it`s difficulty from there. As an adult, I`d also think that you`d know more about what`s hard and what`s not than any of us ever could- I don`t see why you`re asking a question you should already know the answer to. Anyways, I agree whole-heartedly with Shaun. Totentanz (Or however you spell it) by Liszt is a tough piece. Prokofiev Concerto`s kick some major tail, too.

Actually after 30 years of experience you`d probably know what`s musically challenging as well.

I think you`re looking for some different in playing piano.
Let`s try to find someone to play a piece of piano four hands or duet or piano concerto. Or maybe try to find the music sheet from the eastern style like Korea, Japan.

Let`s try to find X-Japan music sheet like `Endless Rain`, `Say Anything`, `Tears`, `First Love`.. It`s not too hard but not too easy ^__^

Go to your local library, and get your sheet music there. You can find really hard music collections printed in the 40`s and what not. I just checked out the book of
"NINETEENTH-CENTURY EUROPEAN PIANO MUSIC: UNFAMILIAR MASTERWORKS"
If you are looking for a challenge, this is the book for you. There is an extremely large amount of technical stuff and lots of fast finger work that seems inhuman. These compositions are in their original format and untouched.
Play the song "Molto adagio con anima ed espressione"

Try these:
Balakirev, Mily - ‘Islamey, an Oriental Fantasy for Piano in Db
Liszt, Franz - ‘Rhapsodie Hongroise’ No.2
Beethoven, Ludwig van - ‘Appassionata’ Sonata for Piano in F Minor, Op.57 (No.23)
If you can play them, then you truly are a genius of the highest order.
I for one am now on Rondo alla Turca. I`ve been playing it for 2 weeks for 1 hour / day, learned half of it.
