It used to be just seven octaves, but something weird happened and they added three more keys.
Some pianos have more than 88 keys, but the last few keys are almost never used.

on an 88 key piano there are more then 88 keys. For the high registers there are three strings to a note, then two and the last few have one string per note (strings are two think to dampen two strings)

i`m not counting though?

I think you meant strings.
On my piano there are 225 PINS, that is (3(59)+2(19)+1(10)). One of the treble strings may be looped around the other side and wound in another peg. According to my guesses, there are 137 strings.

i stand corrected. (keys/strings)

i`m sure piano`s differ on the number of strings.

By the way i recently discovered that Bosendorfer is the only company that tunes the strings lower then the low a on other pianos.

Sometimes they make those keys black. There are some pieces that use these notes however they are mostly there to add bass to EVERY note. These strings are designed to vibrate when any note is pressed on the piano. This adds depth to the tone of the piano.
