hey guys i currently play trumpet in my 7th grade band but my asthma has sadly returned with a vengeance and i am last chair(not that i suck i missed chairing) plus i am just kinda sick of being compared to the first trumpet jessica because she plays loud and when we chair on our concert music hers is always easier. anyways, i'm sick of trumpet and was skeptical about it at the beginning. i want to switch to percussion because i LOVE playing the snare and my teacher said i might be able to switch after our next competition. the only problems besides convincing my dad to start renting a percussion kit is the kid that was gonna help me is away due to medical and mental problems. any help on trying to learn alone?

I'm in High School Marching Band (percussion) and Concert Band (oboe).

For percussion, I'm guessing you'd start on concert snare, or keyboard percussion.

For keyboard percussion (Marimba, Vibraphone, etc.), you'd need to learn to the notes. This instrument is Concert Pitch (C), so no transposing issues. The notes on the keyboard are the same as piano. If you are doing well, beware of learning the four-mallet technique. Cut-up and sore fingers ensued.

For snare, I'd recommend going to Vic Firth, and learning the "basics": One Stroke Roll, Paradiddle, and Flam. They become a good foundation to work on. See here: http://www.vicfirth.com/education/rudiments.php

(My Biology partner is one level above me (Symphonic Band), and plays trumpet, and he's also a decent percussionist.)

look first of all, dont take advice from about drums unless they have played in an orcastra, symphoney or was on a drumline in DCI. I am on the Oregon Crusaders snare line and i can tell you that after playing trombone then going to snare it was not an easy switch. first if you want to be a good snare you need to get traditional grip down. thats the grip that most drumlines use. then you will need to get the baisic 40 rudiments down. after you have mastered thoughs you can probably go to hybrid rudiments. although there are hundreds of different hybrids you can find some of the more commen ones at vicfirth.com otherwise practice alot and try your best. i practice about 4 hours a day. good luck!
